E-40 and the Warriors for ESPN!!!!!!!!!! LINK IN BIO. Baby’s first ESPN piece ;)
@e40 is a regional hero and those kind of stars fascinate me. They’re the reason why hip-hop fandom is so deep, unique, and so bigger than just what you used to read in Rolling Stone. (No disrespect to RS — of course). I didn’t grow up with his music but as I wanted to get deeper in our culture — some of the blackest art doesn’t come from New York to be honest — 40 is an artist who I gained an understanding of and an appreciation of. This piece is a labor of love!!!!! @jstnmchl and I worked on this for a month!
I debated for several months whether to post this story, but I have never known to be scared of anything and I think I want to: A few months ago, a writer who I used to respect, took my real kindness for weakness and tried to tell me that I had to write for my community more (whatever that means) and not become some token writer. As if I could ever not shine the brightest anywhere that I go. I’m here to say that I can do whatever; I can tap into whatever. I am comfortable dog!!!! Lenox avenue to Canal St to Flatbush Ave!!!! Everything I do will be great and Black. I am Tupac meets Tiger Woods meets Kobe meets MLK meets Eric Adams meets Doreen meets Greg Tate meets Lawrence Burney! I believe there is a world for Black men to be themselves, to go into any space and be who they are, to be class conscious to love themselves, to love people. I’M A NUTSO, KLEPTO. THERE IS STAGES TO THESE WAGES! Dont disrespect me!!!! LINK IN BIO!!!! (okay back to showing mystery and humility)
In June, I traveled to Chicago to spend a night with Mr. Playboi Carti — hip-hop’s leading innovator — to try to find, even if its complicated, what is beneath all of the radical rage, energy, and showstopping charisma. Link in bio. Thank you @dscott@ericrennerbrown@yadownwithrmm
