Tues, MAY 19th 6:30p Join me, Kou Tukala Nyan, in conversation with artist and poet, Jaybird Walker (@jaybirdewalker ) About Special Guest Jason “Jaybird” Walker is an award-winning actor, writer, & singer originally from Cranston, RI. He was an alternate for the 1999 ProvSlam team and has been the host & facilitator of several Providence-based readings over the last couple of decades, including the Spoken Word Poetry Series, Got Poetry! Live, & the SWAP Meet. In 2019, he won the Motif Magazine award for Favorite Spoken Word Artist. Through Stillwater River Publications, he has four poetry collections published under the name Jay Walker, his original stage/pen name; he added the bird to avoid confusion with the other Jay Walker, from Run The World. The books are available on Amazon, or at stillwaterbooksRI.com, if you don’t want to give Bezos your money. Kae’s poetry focuses on the intersections of marginalized identities, power, privilege, societal trauma, naming covert abuse within the experience of relational love, accessing inner joy, and finding empathy for our monsters. ADA accessible venue Quill Stitches is a spoken word artist with a background in theater and art therapy. She was recently featured at The Sweet Little Spooky Show where she dressed like the basket case from “The Breakfast Club” and took us through an emotional journey from a lost soul into her divinity. Quill recognises that poetry is a powerful tool, using her words to bring shadows to light, transforming trauma into abundance. After her performances, she welcomes listeners to connect with her and share whatever might have come through for them. Mx. Asher (they/them) is a trans & neurodivergent spoken word artist, sexual assault survivor, and former sex worker. Their work focuses on vulnerable storytelling and personal experience to transform current events into emotionally resonant performances. Introducing @jaybirdewalker as Shakespeare! Jaybird Walker is an award-winning actor, singer, & writer originally from Cranston, RI who has graced the stage of RI-based groups past & present, like The Contemporary Theater Company, Mixed Magic Theatre, Trinity Rep, & Spectrum Theatre Ensemble. Also an actor in independent films made in the region, he won Best Performance in a Horror Feature at the Shawna Shea Film Festival. In addition, Jay’s a published poet who was an alternate on the 1999 Providence Poetry Slam team & Motif Magazine’s Favorite Spoken Word Artist in 2019. Admission: ONLY $5!!! ADA accessible venue Rudy Cabrera aka Rudacious is an Actor/Poet/Storyteller from Providence, RI. Rudy started Acting at 17 and has done an array of stage productions from various Shakespeare shows to more modern contemporary theater productions, even doing bilingual Spanish speaking roles. Rudy also graced the stage of PPAC (Providence Performance Art Center) which seats up to 3,100 in Trinity Rep’s yearly production of “Christmas Carol!” On camera Rudy has played Dimitrius in the Boston Based web series “The Pineapple Diaries” and Jason Myers in the 18x award winning Hip Hop horror short film "Deep Redd!"  As a poet Rudy has performed nationally in poetry slams representing the Lizard Lounge team in Cambridge, MA and in 2013 his team made the top 8 in the country. A two time winner at the 2024 Motif Awards, Rudy has dominated the stages of countless schools, fundraisers, conferences and even random hole in the wall dive bars. “I’m just a lover of language. I seek both the witty ness of language to entertain & then the purpose of language to create the emotion or message I want the audience to have! It’s really about connecting words with people!”

His work explores the raw and unfiltered aspects of life, blending vulnerability with some laughs. A self-proclaimed caffeine connoisseur, he keeps the energy flowing as he navigates the highs and lows of his creative journey. His artistic pursuits span various performance spaces. He has appeared on GBH’s Outspoken Saturdays and The Daily Note’s Poetry Night. He’s a member of the 2025-2026 Providence Poetry Slam team. He aims to scale both literal and metaphorical heights through his work. His art—much like his life—is a balance of imperfection and persistence.
