#DOP Jasper Wolf (

@gucci ’s THE TIGER, a new short film premiering at Milan Fashion Week, directed by Spike Jonze &
@halinareijn .
“The look sprouts from a melt of Spike and Halina’s directorial
vision and unique collaboration. [They] delivered an original script
on invitation, inspired by [Gucci’s Artistic Director]
@Demna and his collection—La Famiglia. Its constellation of characters is an exciting blend: authentic, allegorical, surrealistic, hyper contemporary. It’s a take on Italian and Hollywood Cinema—a visceral experience in a soft chiaroscuro light. ‘Rembrandt,’ was how Demna described the look, to our delight.
Experiencing Demna’s collection—during prep in the Gucci Atelier on the lot
in the hands of his amazing tailor team—truly gave me, and many others,
goosebumps. It was electric witnessing the fittings with our incredible cast—that was our visual reference. The whole project had a short turnaround to be ready in time for Gucci’s premiere and Demna’s grand opening at Milan Fashion Week in a special build cinema.
We decided to shoot cinemascope, widescreen to be projected in cinema. We envisioned majestic portraiture—a bit heightened, dreamlike, and trippy—a strong appearance in full Gucci. For all these reasons, I had an iconic, anamorphic look with C and B Series [lenses] in mind. The way The Cs render faces is exactly that and so
beautiful—very 3D and touchable. We like to get close to the actors, so I was eager to learn if Panavision could alter the Cs, improving on their close focus and possibly warming up the flare. [1st AC] Trevor Loomis recommended exploring the T Series, so [Marketing Exec] Lori set us up with a call with [SVP of Optical Engineering] Dan Sasaki to discuss what I had in mind. Dan and his team worked their magic modifying a range of T Series, bringing C Series characteristics into the T’s convenience and close focus.
I love shooting with Spike and Halina; they are such authentic visionaries. [This project] definitely underlines my admiration for the art of fashion and costume design. I also want to rave about our amazing cast—to see them transform is pure filmmaking pleasure.”
