The Pretty Graves is a local indie rock band based out Old Saybrook. They just put out their long awaited debut and it’s really good. The BandCamp link is in the comments. Pavement, Built to Spill kind of sound.

Ni Hao and Shalom! May is both Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Representatives from East Lyme’s Jewish and Asian American communities are teaming up for a celebration 5/31 to highlight the ways these two ancient and proud cultures have helped shaped the past 250 years of American history. This one of a kind event is free and open to the public. Please register online.

Come on out to the planetarium at the high school to see East Lyme’s First Selectman, Dan Cunningham, and a band of musicians play some spacey music under the stars!

Danielle already shared this but it’s just too cute not to share again. We moved to East Lyme because of the Book Barn. When the time came to start a family, we wanted to live in a community that supported a bookstore. E.L. had four Book Barns at the time. It was an easy choice to move here and buy our first home. Jasmine toddled among the shelves before she could even talk. She grew up with regular visits to the Book Barn’s different locations. You can see her here availing herself of their Little Tykes car. Well, now she has her own car and she drove off and got herself that first job. Guess who hired her - the Book Barn!

Twenty years ago, Danielle and I went to see a symposium at the Bushnell featuring Kurt Vonnegut (one of my favorite authors) and Jennifer Weiner (one of her favorite authors). I brought with me a diamond ring in a little box and a plan for a one of a kind, literary marriage proposal. There was a Q and A session in the middle of the program and I worked out a plan with Bushnell staff to have the two authors to bless our marriage. The idea was to have them make the announcement on stage and then I’d propose in the audience. Unfortunately, the staff declined to cooperate when the time came so I had to go with plan B which was a wholly improvised thing where I got down on one knee at the coat check before we left the theater. Not exactly what I had intended but it got the job done. She said yes and the rest is history. Last night, after 20 years, we went back to see Ronny Chieng and Hasan Minhaj do a comedy show and snapped a quick picture in front of the coat check. We’ll have to keep the tradition going and visit the coat check again in another 20 years.
