Some hot simmering soul for the summer.
Salute to the folks at Prime Time Records & Tapes for lacing me with the new single from Los Cold Blooded Yesterdays, blending the Southwest’s Latin lowrider soul with the Southeast’s juke joint funk.
The supergroup was put together, combining players from Los Yesterdays out of California and Tennessee’s Cold Blooded Express. And the session went down at Sam Phillips Recording Service right here in Memphis.
This one feels like a sunset cruise with the windows down, perfect for East L.A., Soulsville, or anywhere on the globe.
Crisp copies available at Goner Records, Shangri-La Records, or through Prime Time’s site (@primetimerecordsandtapes ).
This life we live. Oh, so beautiful…
Thanks to @musicbizassoc and @memphisrecordpressing for inviting us to share from the production and consumer sides how transcendent the vinyl revival has been.
A flick with “Flick.” 📸
Always good catching up backstage with legendary Hi Rhythm bassist Leroy “Flick” Hodges. Flick, alongside his brothers Charles and Teenie Hodges, Archie Turner, and Howard Grimes, helped build the unmistakable groove behind Al Green and so many of the classic records that came out of Royal Studios and Hi Records in the 1970s.
Appreciate him always taking the time to sit down and kick it with me for a bit.
Big thanks to my home team, the Memphis Grizzlies, for stopping by the show to talk about Grizz Engage, a new forum bringing together nonprofits, schools, businesses, and community leaders committed to creating more opportunity and stronger connections across Memphis.
Also deeply appreciate the thoughtful gift recognizing years of mutual support and shared investment in the culture and communities that move this city forward. Special thanks to Abusheri, Taylor, Derrick, and all my friends throughout the Grizz organization. Always love building with folks committed to making Memphis stronger together. 🤝🏾🏀
Nonprofits, schools, and businesses interested in attending can learn more and RSVP at Grizzlies.com/Engage.

I guess I missed this part of rehearsal… ‘cause ain’t nobody told me nothin’.
Frayser Boy pulled out his Academy Award onstage.
Back in 2006, he, DJ Paul, and Juicy J won Best Original Song for “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” from Hustle & Flow.
At Riverbeat, during our Memphis Rap OGz set, he shocked the crowd — and all of us onstage — with the real trophy in hand.
Be honest… what would you bring to show and tell?
RZA says he’s in “A-W-E” after the warm reception by Memphis fans along with a proclamation presented by Tennessee State Representative Antonio Parkinson and a Power of Music Award from the Soulsville Foundation.
I’m still in awe, too. I promise you we ain’t done. We just getting started.
Thank you to Jillian, Milton, Kirby, and all my colleagues at @welcometo901 , @memphistravel , @downtownmemphis for tagging me in for a dream assignment sharing this jewel we call “The Beautiful Land,” with the world’s most lethal legion of lyricists.
We took the WU out of Tang… and added a whole lotta love from Memphis!
Frayser brought out the Oscar. The city brought the energy. We saluted amazing music from Soulsville to Shaolin and back again. We met the voice of CJ from San Andreas (not pictured). And we made HISTORY while saluting a LEGACY and cementing UNITY.
Oh… and me and The RZA connect. 👐🏾🐝 BONG, baby. Peace.
Somebody screamed “WU-MEMPHIS” in the street. Word. So you heard?
Riverbeat Weekend still on the move. You’re gonna wanna park yourself near the Main Stage for Saturday, Day 2.
Orange Mound’s biggest boss DJ Squeeky kicking it off before the Memphis Rap OGz, then Ice Cube, then you know who: THE WU-TANG CLAN. Peace.
