The ‘Dear Beloved’//‘Jaik from the Inside’ double screening @pfunctionary was a SUCCESS.
Thank you to everyone who supported along the way(especially @artfromtheinsidemn@endslaverymn and @peoplepeoplemedia ) We are extremely grateful for your keen eyes and participation at the post-screening panel as well. These relationships are the lifeblood for developing abolitionist (oop there goes the algo) frameworks and truly transgressive arts communities.
Please follow @jared_cal to see how you can help spread the word about his growing project and support his homies in Austin and their friends behind bars.

storytelling, and these films embody that spirit.”

2023 in the books! The kids are solidly toddlers, Sophie finished coursework, and I’m eagerly awaiting the snow. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to you and yours.

“In the summer of 2019, the filmmaker Jonathan Pickett (@jphowdy ) and his friends were participating in an intentional-living community facilitated by the Church of the Nazarene, volunteering in exchange for subsidized rent. When a ninety-five-acre farm in the area became available, Pickett and his group, with the help of church-affiliated staff, moved to the property. It came with several animals—chickens, goats, cows, and a boar—and none of the new residents had experience taking care of them. There was a steep learning curve at first, as the group relied on Google and local farmers for all of their agricultural know-how.” - The article continues in @newyorkermag Watch the film on their site.
Massive congratulations to Jonathan for capturing and crafting such a wonderful film. It’s so special that the piece perfectly captures that special start-up season at the farm with the residents and animals figuring each other out. I’m glad that place exists, these people exist, and on most days, that those chickens exist! (They are loud at 4am and the roosters attack my toddler regularly 🤷♂️). Please watch the film, get lost in it, and share it on with people who need to slow down and follow some chickens 🐓
We moved to Minnesota!
This wasn’t meant to be a surprise, but in the ever-present tension that is using social media, we chose to be fully present for the move. But the benefit of all the socials is keeping up relationships with so many people from different seasons of our life. And so we want all our people to know where we are and what we’re up to! (And to come visit us!!!)
Our season in the Bay Area (wow, was that really 5 and a half years?!) brought us major career and family developments - including our cat, our two human children, and an ever-widening community. We are so grateful for the transformational work of working with The Possibility Project and then launching Heirloom East Bay. As our team discerned next steps for the ministry, it was a healthy and good time to make space for the next phase of leadership. We feel so grateful that our kids were welcomed into the world with chickens and goats outside their door, a creek to explore, and a big table, and we are excited to see the farm and community thrive in its new season!
The idea of moving to Minnesota surprised us both and felt so so right deep in our bones. We are choosing a season of rest, healing, connection, joy, and delight. We are now settling into our cozy new home in a Minneapolis neighborhood we adore (where snow is falling outside our window as I type - it looks like a Hallmark Movie. Yes, I know people here are grumbling by March, but it still feels fresh and fun to us!). We are meeting our neighbors, taking walks, shoveling our driveway, listening to the amazing local radio station 89.3 The Current (stream it!), and eating the best ice cream in the world. Sophie’s parents live super close and we get more time with our kiddos in this formative stage.

Today ends a 17 year long journey for me.
My good friend Dan Nelson invited me into the end of his life holding my video camera, and the things that transpired are incredible. We’ve only screened the film to a private audience one time, and the outpouring of affirmation and emotion was incredible. Today that film goes live on Vimeo. Link in bio.
Dan‘s admittedly flawed yet genuine journey to the end exists in all of us as we live differently because of his impact on us. You are invited to watch the film, and please share it with anyone you know would enjoy it.
Thanks to everyone who contributed along the way. This film took a community to bring it into existence. I’m eternally grateful.

Today is the one year anniversary of my accident. Thanks to our wonderful family and community for walking us through this wild season. To be honest, it has mostly been brutal. I’m thankful for how well I’ve recovered, and grateful for the people who pray, support, and love us.
Thanks to Sophie for everything. She has been a rock through some of the worst days and nights you can experience. I’m so sorry this happened, and I’m thankful I have my memories, what works of my body, and I can be here to be a great dad and partner.
Cheers to therapy, running, and trying to figure out keeping margin in my life.
New Film Day! Our 12 minute documentary about Steven Kennedy wandering our farm went live on @nobudge today. We are proud of this meditative exploration of the woods and meticulous execution of craft. Thanks to @kennedywoodbats@jpthuggin@peoplepeoplemedia and @heirloomeastbay . Enjoy!
Welcome to the crew, Milo Julian Clarence!
Everyone is healthy! He’s eating like a champ. Jet is a super sweet brother. Took us a while to land on a name but here’s the meaning…
Milo = Sophie likes it ☺️
Julian = in honor of Saint Julian of Norwich (she loved cats) and also the town where we got engaged
Clarence = in honor of Sophie’s sister @clairespencee and a nod to the angel in It’s A Wonderful Life (one of my dad’s favorites)
