NOW SHOWING - Ben Quilty, ’The River’ There is a particular kind of quiet that can be found in descent, in heading down to some place. Not up to a lookout or out toward a horizon, but down into the base of a valley, where the walls rise steeply on all sides and the world is made to recede. In this body of work, Quilty turns downward to such a place: a river set deep within the landscape, where the scale and weight of the terrain is both oppressive and assuring. Within this landscape, figures appear, almost intrusively. Quilty’s ongoing enquiry into masculinity finds a new articulation here, as men enter the scene not as passive observers, but as agents of disruption. Holding axes, they hack into the very environment that surrounds them. The gesture is both literal and symbolic, echoing broader cycles of extraction, consumption, and waste. Rendered as a commodity, timber becomes product, product becomes trend, trend becomes discard. The rhythm is familiar, even banal. There is a clear sense of disquiet beneath the surface of these works. Yet their beauty is not diminished by this but thickened and tangled by it. In the landscape, the threat is often imagined as something elemental or unknown, yet more often than not, it is human. These figures complicate the romanticism of place, unsettling any notion of it as purely restorative. Instead, the environment becomes a site of tension, where beauty and destruction coexist. ’The River’ is currently showing in the gallery and online until 6 June. I love my job but some days are just a little brighter than others. We are so very proud of all our artists who are hanging in the AGNSW Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes and we are beyond happy for Richard Lewer and Lucy Culliton. These beautiful, hard working and dedicated artists both deserve the accolades they received yesterday. And it’s always a joy to see Iluwanti and Sylvia Ken! Thank you to everyone at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for their dedication to this prize and the artists who enter. @richard_lewer @lucyculliton @tjalaarts @_guido_maestri @keithburt_artist @natashabieniek @davidjamesgriggs @artgalleryofnsw #richardlewer #iluwantiken #lucyculliton #archibaldprize

Big congratulations to Lucy Culliton, Winner of the Sulman Prize 2026. “This is Toolah. She is one of seven greyhounds (nine dogs in total, all rescued) who live with me at Bibbenluke in the Snowy Monaro region of NSW. This chair is Toolah’s favourite spot to sleep while I paint in the studio. I love how she camouflages herself into the upholstery of the chair. At the time, I was painting large Monaro grass paintings in a matching palette, so I had to include one.” Lucy’s award-winning artwork can be viewed alongside all the finalists at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until 16 August 2026. Huge congratulations to Richard Lewer, Winner of the Archibald Prize 2026 for his portrait of Iluwanti Ken. The subject of this portrait is Iluwanti Ken, a Pitjantjatjara Elder, senior artist and Ngangkari (traditional healer). She is a finalist in this year’s Wynne Prize. ‘I spent time with Iluwanti at Tjala Arts in Amata, in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. Although we have known one another for several years through shared exhibitions, being on Country together deepened my understanding of her presence and the responsibilities she carries, Iluwanti paints with an urgency I recognise. Her work depicts the Walawuru Tjukurpa, the story of the eagles. Birds appear in her drawings, paintings and ceramics as teachers of care, protection, provision and resilience, particularly for women and children. These lessons shaped how I approached this portrait. I wanted to convey her strength and attentiveness, and reflect the way she watches over others. In person, Iluwanti is a small woman, but she carries immense, quiet authority. I painted her life‑size, so her presence meets the viewer directly. The yellow ochre background holds the intensity of the heat and light we were working in. She loves bright clothing, which feels inseparable from her spirit, and the traces of paint on her arm acknowledge her as a working artist, as if she has just stepped out of the studio.’ - Richard Lewer 2026 Richard’s award-winning artwork can be viewed alongside all the finalists at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until 16 August 2026. COMING SOON - Ben Quilty ’The River’ Ben Quilty’s paintings have long moved between portraiture and landscape, holding space for questions of identity, place, and the weight of experience. In this new body of work, the landscape comes into sharper focus, not as a backdrop, but as something active, shifting and charged. “Late in the afternoon and early in the morning, sunlight cuts across a vast rock shelf, illuminating the valley with a kind of theatrical precision. The space reveals itself as a stage, expansive, immersive, and strangely composed. It is this sense of both accident and intention that seems to hold Quilty’s attention, as though the landscape itself is performing. Quilty’s ongoing enquiry into masculinity finds a new articulation here, as men enter the scene not as passive observers, but as agents of disruption. Holding axes, they hack into the very environment that surrounds them.” ’The River’ will be showing in the gallery from 13 May - 6 June. Please contact the gallery for more information. Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country is an artist-led project bringing together major works by senior First Nations artists and collectives from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, Coober Pedy and Tarntanya/Adelaide, South Australia. Working at an ambitious scale, these paintings depict Country while honouring the enduring power of Tjukurpa (Aṉangu law/cultural stories) that shapes and sustains community life. Through distinctive visual languages, at times vibrant and expansive, at others quiet and restrained, artists and collectives translate Tjukurpa onto canvas, reinforcing deep connections to Country and the ongoing transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country is now open at the National Gallery of Australia. 11 Apr - 23 Aug 2026 @nationalgalleryaus @apy_ac_collective Image credits: Iluwanti Ken, Sylvia Ken and Tuppy Goodwin at the Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country community opening.
