In haar keynote gaat ze onder meer in op duurzaamheid, culturele toe-eigening, perspectieven uit het Globale Zuiden en het dekoloniseren van modesystemen. 🎟️ Deelname is gratis, inschrijven is verplicht. Great to have contributed to the book accompanying the 'Africa's Fashion Diaspora' exhibit at the @museumatfit in New York and to have served as a member of the exhibition’s advisory committee. The book is full-colour, has 248 pages and 149 fabulous photographs. In my 20(!) page chapter, titled #BlackFashionMatters, I highlighten some of the designers featured in 'Voices of Fashion: Black couture, beauty & styles'. This 2021 @centraalmuseum exhibit was curated by yours truly, Ninke Bloemberg & Anne-Karlijn van Kesteren with a two-fold goal: to celebrate Black models & creatives worldwide and to challenge European standards within the industry to emphasize the fact that colonialism also (and still!!) effects the way we think about beauty and (Black) fashion. This topic is also adressed in the 'Knowing Cotton Otherwise' book and sustainable fashion museum @fashionforgood exhibit, curated by Alyxandra Westwood, Sophie Jager-Van Duren a.o. with creative direction by moi. '404 Connection (Not) Found' is de titel van een productie van jongerentheatergroep De Gasten die gister in premiére ging. Een interactieve(!) voorstelling over de betekenis van contact in deze digitale tijden die is gemaakt voor scholieren, maar ook uitnodigt tot reflectie als je net iets ouder bent. 🙃 Chapeau voor de makers en de spelers/gidsen onder wie onze talentvolle, charismatische en knappe Samaël Deul ❤️, acteur, queer activist en spoken word performer. Yet another meaningful and beautiful exhibit in my hometown: 'Darwin in Paradise Camp' by Yuki Kihara, a Japanese-Samoan artist using beauty and visual appeal to bring her message across. Just like I do. In the exhibit, showcasing video, paintings, artefacts and archive material, she questions Global North binary ideas about gender and identity, linked to Darwin and colonial ways of thinking. She also 'upcycles' the work of Paul Gauguin by portraying (and naming! 🙌🏿) members of her own Samoan third-gender community in the same way Gauguin once portrayed Samoan women and girls. Love how she does all this in a very humourous and accessible way. 'Darwin in Paradise Camp' is on show til January 2027 in @wereldmuseum.leiden . Definately worth a visit. Also because of the wonderful exhibition design. Note! In the museum shop downstairs, the book on Samoan queer life Kihara co-wrote is for sale. And, oh wonder, it’s displayed right opposite my book on Keti Koti. 🫠

'Améfrica' is a conjunction of 'Africa' and 'Latin America', coined by Afro-Brazilian intellectual and activist Lélia Gonzalez. It is also the title of an exhibit at @caac_sevilla , a 15th century monastery that was transformed into a porcelain factory in the 19th century and is now a ln art museum complex with luscious gardens, a restaurant and a cafetaria. The exhibit showcases 99 artists from 30+ countries exploring artistic links between Africa and the Americas. To name a few: Kara Walker, Zanele Muholi, Carrie Mae Weems, Yinka Shonibare and Buhlebezwe Siwani, who designed the transatlantic slavery monument 'Remember Our United Beginning' on the Lange Voorhout in The Hague. We also did a city tour with @sevillanegra , a non-profit organisation that aims to decolonize tourism by highlighting the few traces that slavery left in Sevilla. Thanks to Sheryl and team for confronting the city’s historical amnesia and actively reclaiming space for the stories, resistance and enduring legacy of enslaved people.

Walking through, I realized once again: art isn’t just there to be admired, it's also about challenging perspectives. Who gets to be seen? Whose stories are told? Onlangs werd mij tijdens een boekenevent gevraagd voor wie ik 'Kan ik nog thuis zijn in dit land' heb geschreven. "Voor iedereen die het wil lezen," antwoordde ik, "maar in de eerste plaats wilde ik mezelf moed inspreken." Later moest ik denken aan @GerjoleestGraag , die een heel mooie recensie over het boek schreef. Het raakt me telkens opnieuw om te lezen of horen dat mijn woorden ook anderen hoop en vertrouwen geven.
