Thesis collection: vestigial structures group photos
Vestigial structures refer to parts of the human body that have gradually lost their function through evolution and are now deemed ”no longer necessary,“ such as male nipples, the appendix, or auricular muscles.
These remnants of evolution fade over time, slowly degenerating until they potentially vanish entirely— reduced to so-called ”waste“ within the human body.
However, while humans remove their own vestigial parts, this logic of elimination is often extended, unjustifiably, to other living beings. Animal features such as dog tails, cat claws, or rabbit ears-naturally integral to those creatures-are frequently deemed excessive and cut off at will. This anthropocentric view that denies the bodily integrity of others is a form of everyday violence, pervasive yet rarely questioned.
Through this project, design becomes a medium of critique. It challenges such latent oppressive behaviors and expresses resistance and protest. Ultimately, it calls for a reawakening of respect-for the original integrity and intrinsic value of every living being‘s physical.
