327 years apart. The new hexafoil that I’m carving on a ceiling truss, and the little wonky daisywheel that appeared from under thick layers of gloss-paint in the oldest part of the house by the fireplace. The removal of the paint revealed the date 1699, some faint Marian marks and concentric circles, all so called ”witch marks” to protect the house.
@folkmagicman has done an extensive survey of these kind of carvings in England. It was in his book that I found a reference to the 1594 engraving titled ”Trierer Hexentanzplatz” depicting the mayhem that might descend through the chimney if the marks are crossed out. Guess good I managed to get this carving done in time for Walpurgis weekend.
@forgottengalicia also have a good article online about hexafoil carving in Ukraine.
Janina Pedan is a Ukrainian set designer. Born in 1984 Pedan moved to London at the age of 20 to study fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London. She established herself in the UK’s creative scene through her work as a set designer working with designers such as Grace Wales Bonner, Simone Rocha and Ben Toms.
Pedan’s installations often feature disassembled cars, heavy metal constructions, haystacks, flowers and textiles – here, sgraffito tiles are decorated with a tree-of-life motif inspired by those found in Ukraine’s Dnipro region. Working behind the scenes, the artist creates beautifully-considered avant-garde stages, where photographers and designers’ subjects are elevated through Pedan’s vision. Pedan has lent this vision to RIBBON-commissioned projects including The Chalk Circle, which took place across Lviv in 2025 with Faktura 10, curated by Marta Kuzma.

Last week of ”GIRLS” exhibition at @momuantwerp
If you didn’t make it to see the show, you can still get a glimpse of it through the beautiful catalogue. 💛
Dnipro x Devon ▪️▫️
Wanted to make a fireback for the wood-burner so decided to draw on a few different vernacular traditions. The geometric pattern was inspired by fireplace sgraffito decorations that were very popular 1650-1750 in south of England, especially in Devon. Sadly they are hardly documented and are rare to come across as the plaster they were executed on degraded easily.
The side panels feature a Ukrainian tree-of-life motif inspired by a textile design from Dnipro. Fire hearths in Ukraine were often decorated with these popular motifs and I particularly like the versions that were made by pasting paper-cuttings straight onto the stove walls. My version is made from terracotta tiles that have been decorated with a white clay slip by using paper stencils for that same graphic effect.
Another big project from this year. Had the pleasure of working on the exhibition design for ”GIRLS. On Boredom, Rebellion and Being In-Between”, curated by the amazing @elisadewyngaert .
So honoured to once again have had the opportunity participate in this wonderful process with the whole team at @momuantwerp 💞

Made a block-print for my plywood Radix chair based on a pattern from Mykola Samokysh album “Motifs of Ukrainian Ornament” from the early 1900s. He sketched ornaments from various textiles (many from Poltava) exhibited in the Kharkiv 1902 Archeological Fair. The beautiful album of 40 plates is available in the New York Public Library digital collections.

This session explores the city’s urban fabric as a site where identity, collective memory, and culture are shaped and activated.
We will discuss the consequences of erasing historical traces from the cityscape and consider the role ornamentation plays in memory and cultural continuity. We will also explore the ways in which the everyday aesthetic experience is deeply connected to political reality and what the role of the artist might be in this relationship.
🟡 The Stammering Circle — project of Faktura 10, a key initiative of Ribbon International. Main exhibition locations: Jam Factory Art Center, DIM42 LME “Lviv Radio”, Machine Hall of Lviv Polytechnic.
