What a month! 🏴🥹🦁 After following England away for the first time this Euros, I can say I’m absolutely now firmly a ‘country over club’ man. 24 years of watching live football across countries & continents, and I’ve never experienced a stadium atmosphere like that before. You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off, but you all took the roof and windows too. I never expected in my lifetime to be lucky enough to see England play live in a major final, and this was everything I’d dreamed of and more, even despite not getting it done on the pitch.
Every single fan I met over the last few weeks (bar one ketted nutter outside the Irish bar yesterday 😂) was absolutely 10 10. Boys & girls from Shrewsbury, Exeter, Sunderland, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Crawley, Nottingham, Lincoln & Croydon (!), all moving heaven and earth for - in their words - “their Champions League”. Hearing about the mad journeys to get to games, thousands spent, people sharing cars, food, buying strangers beers, helping people get home… this was a world apart from any other club team or foreign national team. Spain barely could muster 10,000 fans last night, to draw a comparison.
That’ll be #Southgate’s unique legacy; bringing fans together from all over the UK to back the national team for maybe the first time in our lifetime. When the dust settles in a few years, he should absolutely be knighted for the job he’s done. He’s had a remarkable impact, and never stopped us dreaming. 👏🏽
