Pleased to have my photograph of Joseph Marioni’s studio floor (he turned unsuccessful canvases face down to use as “carpets”) the cover image of Davis Smith-Brecheisen’s new book. Photos of Marioni’s studio can be found on my website’s “Studio” section in “Works” (jameswelling.net).
Last night with David Zwirner after my induction into the NYFA Hall of Fame. In my acceptance speech I described how grateful I was that NYFA supported the type of experimental photographs I - and others such as James Casebere - were making in contrast to the rather more narrow idea of the medium that the all powerful Guggenheim Foundation favored - a conservative vision of photography as a road trip/ethnographic documentary slide show that I certainly did not subscribe to then or now.
