Gerade die Menschen und Orte, die Schutz und Vertrauen bieten sollen, bergen für Frauen das größte Risiko, Gewalt und Missbrauch zu erfahren. In der Arbeit „Kingdom“ werden die Themen der Gewalt ebenfalls aufgegriffen. Die Textil-Installationen eröffnen eigene Zwischenräume im Raum, die jedoch in sich geschlossen bleiben: Zugehörigkeit und Ausgrenzung gehen Hand in Hand. Slide 2 & 6: before the dreams kick in Variable Größe, Buntstift auf Papier 2025 - fortlaufend In der fortlaufenden Serie „before the dream kicks in“ zeigt Isatou Jallow zum ersten Mal Zeichnungen. An den Zeichnungen arbeitet sie immer vor dem Schlafengehen. Frei aus dem Gedächtnis gezeichnet bringen die Bilder traumhafte Ungenauigkeiten hervor. Die Erinnerungen von Tieren und Kindern vereinen sich als Figuren der Unschuld, als Schutzbedürftige. Slide 4: carousels of waterfalls (for the kids who died) V und VI 35 x 25,5 cm Fototransfer auf Metallplatte 2025 In „carousels of waterfalls (for the kids who died)“ V und VI, zeigt sich Isatou Jallow selbst weinend. Seit Oktober 2023 begann sie sich selbst zu porträtieren um ihren eigenen Schmerz und Ohnmachtsgefühle gegenüber dem Weltgeschehen zu dokumentieren und künstlerisch zu verarbeiten. Ausstellungsansichten von der Solo-Show ‘WALKING ON EGGSHELLS‘ von Isatou Jallow @mybabyloves_moi @jallow_creating Isatou Jallow widmet sich in ihrer Ausstellung “Walking on Eggshells” der Dualität von emotionaler Fragilität und Härte, Schutz und Gewalt, die das Leben von insbesondere Schwarzen Frauen prägen. Das Sinnbild “auf Eierschalen zu laufen” evoziert ein Gefühl einer latent lauernden Gefahr. In einer Gesellschaft, die sich für viele Menschen mehr als eine Bedrohung statt als Sicherheit darstellt, muss Wachsamkeit und Übervorsicht ein andauernder Zustand sein, um Anfeindung und Gewaltsituationen vorzubeugen. Isatou Jallow verleiht den Geschichten über Ohnmacht, Machtmissbrauch, Schmerz und Verletzlichkeit Raum und Ausdruck. Die erdrückenden Realitäten werden kontrastiert von einer materiellen Leichtigkeit ihrer Arbeiten. Ihre Malereien betrachtet sie als visuelle Gedichte, als eine Form des Geschichtenerzählens, die außerhalb westlicher Normen und Traditionen fortlebt. In the space @wirdnachgereicht in Basel, I present my newest installation “7doors”. 7doors transforms the front room of the off-space by using Gambian textiles, dyed by one of the last traditional fabric dyer, who only uses natural materials in Gambia: Musa Jaiteh. These textiles serve as carriers for my paintings—works whose visual language oscillates between tenderness and brutality, fragility and strength. The dense hanging is a deliberate gesture, intended to evoke a sense of confinement that symbolically represents personal and cultural constraints. The conventional Western exhibition space enters into a charged dialogue with West African elements. This spatial juxtaposition reflects my own experience of non-belonging. The constructed environment becomes a physical manifestation of my intercultural identity—one that transcends the sum of its parts. Through my projects, I aim to create space for marginalized narratives, exploring intercultural identity from a non-Western perspective and opening up new ways of thinking about belonging, representation, and memory. By intentionally breaking with the conventions of the white cube, I transform the exhibition space into a multilayered experiential landscape. Working in an installative manner and using textiles that function both as image carriers and architectural elements, I merge painting with spatial design. The symbolic motifs in my oil paintings provide access to the thematic depth of the works and invite viewers into an artificial world “in between.” The exhibition space becomes a site of embodied experience, where the audience doesn’t just observe, but moves, feels, and reflects—making the complexity of intercultural identity tangibly present.
