last night i had a secret exhibition on a train that i hired from queensland rail. the guests weren’t told where we were going - they found out once we left roma street station. i took them to woodridge. and not just because it’s a cool idea but because of what it means to me personally. while living in housing commission in woodridge i attended a private all boys school, and from the first day i became so ashamed of being from woodridge that i lied to everyone throughout high school about where i lived (like, i’d always have a new excuse why friends couldn’t come over to mine, when really i didn’t live where i said i did). so, i have no memory of getting the train to woodridge with mates because i didn’t let myself have that memory - i was too afraid. this exhibition allowed me to finally have that memory (and share it with so many people). and that’s also why the exhibition is called ‘something i should have done a long time ago’. anyway, there were 32 new paintings, all created for this exhibition (smaller than my usual works, as they had to fit in the windows). there was also a surprise fashion show - a collaboration with designer shania letondeur (this was her first time sharing her work publicly and she killed it). the looks were inspired by people who get trains and the garments were made from everything from cardboard, plastic, and even a curtain we found at an op shop in woodridge (the scrubs the “nurse” wears). also, all of the “models” are actually actors, ones who’ve acted in my films set and shot in woodridge - so it was amazing working with them again. i have so much love for them. anyway, the highlight of the thing for me was when i chatted with dad, as he sat on this train i’d hired, and he told me what his favourite paintings were - the ones of us together - with a huge smile on his face, while surrounded by all these people his boy had brought to woodridge. thanks to shania, steph, sammy, king, dimi, jack, candice, zoe, matthew, aaron, danny, will, oliver and holly. also thanks to aleece and the queensland rail team. and, of course, thank you to everyone who came and now shares this memory with me. until next time.

my friend louis took this photo at the HOLLYWOODRIDGE opening at mitchell fine art. in the exhibition, each artwork responds to a different stage of filmmaking, and each artwork is also autobiographical. in this photo i’m in the middle of explaining to a small group why my response to the catering stage of film is a painting of a rose with “no strings” written over it in spray paint. catering is more than just food - it’s taking care of people. keeping their bellies full so they can get through the day. for 8 months i attended a rosies outreach when i was doing it tough. twice a week, and the first saturday of each month, i’d line up with other patrons and have some dinner in the park. so, when i think of catering as something to respond to i don’t think of painting a sandwich or a salad or a piece of fruit. i think of rosies. the incredible organisation that’s helped thousands of queenslanders doing it tough. and it’s not even about the food - that just a bonus. it’s really about the structure and stability and connection it adds to lives that can be, for the most part, lacking of those things. and they’re very important things for us to have. so, in this photo, taken by one of my favourite people, i’m sharing the very personal meaning behind this artwork with others, on the opening of an exhibition that wouldn’t have happened without: the photographer louis - his friendship and support since i met him a decade ago has meant the world to me, or the charity rosies - the work their volunteers do changes so many lives in big ways (mine included), and of course, mitchell fine art, for giving me the amazing opportunity that allowed this exhibition to happen, so a photo like this could exist. thank you louis and rosies and mitchell fine art. i’m not smiling but in this photo i’m as happy as i can be.

here is an artwork from my solo exhibition HOLLYWOORIDGE at MITCHELL FINE ART (where each artwork responds to a different stage of filmmaking - from DEVELOPMENT to DIRECTOR’S CUT). this artwork, which is my response to PIRACY, is a burned DVD featuring all 3 of my super low budget WOODRIDGE CINEMA films (written, directed, produced and edited by me). the DVD is entirely authored and burned by me in the studio (it takes around 2 hours just to burn a single DVD). there are only 50 available - each numbered 1-50/50. as well as the films, the DVD also features optional subtitles and commentary (feat. myself and actor dimitri politis). buy it, watch it, frame it, hang it (after all, it is an artwork). $41.14 each. only available through MITCHELL FINE ART. head to MITCHELLFINEARTGALLERY.COM.AU to purchase (you can collect on opening night this friday if you like!) xo
