Early concept art of the “Caravan” 🚂
The main set-piece of the entire series. This early draft was much more similar to a subway car combined with a bug-like movement. The feeling of it snaking through the desert perfectly captured the combining elements of both monster and mech, creating an exhilarating mode of transportation for our cast of characters!

— Y’all are a bunch of (handsome) Canadian boys, what’s up with all that Japanese stuff?
Our comic bases its premise on the mythos of “Kaijus vs Mechas”, a popular Japanese sub-genere from the late 1950s where… you guessed it, big Godzilla-size monsters fight equally fierce mechanical forces. To honour its legacy, we felt it would be appropriate to create a variant of our first cover to reflect its Japanese roots, as its themes are one of the many fundamental pillars to Mechs VS Monsters 🦖
We focused on what we collectively felt would best serve the story, and what would be the most interesting way of bringing our world to life. The team shares an equal love for western comic books and mangas, so why not blend the two?

An hour outside Bogotá in the northern Andes of Colombia lies Laguna de Guatavita, a sacred lake steeped in history and myth. This is the original inspiration for the “Legend of El Dorado,” the mythical City of Gold. But El Dorado wasn’t a city, it was a lake.
For the Muisca people, the lake was a divine site where they offered gold and treasures to honor their gods. In the 1500s, Spanish conquistadors and other gold hunters forcibly drained the lake, lowering the water level and uncovering hundreds of golden artifacts along the shores.
The trench carved to drain the lake became a painful scar for the Muisca, who named it “La Herida” (“The Pain”).
Recently a landslide triggered by heavy storms filled the trench, as if the earth itself was reclaiming what was lost.
I had the pleasure hike this beautiful place with my family. The elevation was pretty crazy: at the peak we reached over 3000 meters above sea level, one of the highest points I’ve ever been.
At this elevation the ecosystem changes to the stunning páramo. An alpine biome with beautiful giant succulent-like plants called frailejones.
My family has been visiting this same lake for many years so it was an honour to finally have the chance to see it for myself.
