Green bean? Yep. Still cool? I think so.
This was not the viper I was looking for that evening, but I am really glad we crossed paths.

A top contender for the prettiest snake species in Southeast Asia, arguably the whole world.
This one was in great shape - an elegant, gracile elapid. We also found a much chunkier, battle-scarred, malodorous, and fly-infested Bungarus flaviceps. Quite the contrast between red-headed snakes. This one was much easier to work with!

Two beautiful Hypnale zara from Sri Lanka. The first four photos are of an individual sporting some unusually light coloration. This was was probably my favorite snake of the ones I saw in Sri Lanka. The final two photos are of a somewhat darker one we found after walking through some leaves on the edge of a path.

Thank you for helping me find these, @stealthywildgaze . I’ll be back to look for H. nepa!

These little guys will never be as popular as big, colorful vipers, or even their more popular cousins in Rhacophoridae, but I have always really enjoyed Microhylid frogs and spent time over my last few Borneo trips seeking them out and photographing them.
Here are few I found:
Photo 1: Metaphrynella sundana (Bornean tree hole frog)
Photo 2: Metaphrynella sundana (Bornean tree hole frog, in situ)
Photos 3 & 4: Microhyla malang (Bornean narrow-mouthed frog)
Photo 5: Chaperina fusca (Saffron-bellied frog, with yellow ventral spots)
Photo 6: Chaperina fusca (Saffron-bellied frog, with white ventral spots)
Photo 7: Kalophrynus meizon (Bornean sticky frog)
Photo 8: Kalophrynus baluensis (Kinabalu sticky frog)
The Metaphrynella were a particular challenge… I could hear their calls all over the jungle, but actually finding one in an accessible, photographable spot was very difficult.
All were photographed in Sabah except the Kalophrynus meizon which was in Sarawak.

Trimeresurus hageni is such a photogenic viper. One of the best “common” Trimeresurus species for sure. There are a couple of macro shots in the carousel but I really like the leading wide-angle shot.

This individual was found on an @exploreherpetology trip by @eddymamana or @rupertsreptiles . They both found back-to-back similar hageni that night and I can’t remember whose this is!

Back in March I took my family to look for tigers and leopards in Nagarhole National Park. We were successful and had a lot of fun, but herpetofauna in the area was pretty scarce. Super hot and dry weather was partially responsible for that. I still managed a lifer though. This adorable little gecko was hanging around one night in some vegetation near our room.

This common lizard was named after a super interesting historical figure, Joseph Cheesman Thompson. Joseph worked under cover in East Asia for the U.S. in the early 20th century, using the pseudonym Victor Kühne, among others. He had an active interest in herpetology, authoring a range of papers in the field, earning him the nickname “Snake.” He also used herpetology as a cover for his work in espionage.

The Andaman krait is one of the many endemic snakes in the Andamans. These seemed unusually common and easy to find compared to most other krait species I have encountered. Lycodon and Fowlea are also thick on the ground in parts of the Andamans, no doubt providing an ample food supply for the kraits. The coloration of these guys reminds me of fasciatus, but otherwise they seem more like candidus.
Scroll through for wide-angle and macro shots. I had trouble choosing a favorite but in this case I lean macro. The wide-angle shot in the second slot was a close second.
@vegancobra spotted this on a trip with @ecophiswildlife . Thank you!

We hiked for hours to get this snake, checking countless trees along kilometers of steep, muddy trails. We flooded our boots crossing a river. And we came out largely empty handed, finding only a few Ahaetulla, a small, male Wagler’s, and one miniature Aplopeltura along the way. Somewhat dejected and exhausted, we turned back. Just before emerging from the forest, on the final uphill stretch to our car, @rupertsreptiles spotted this little guy, our primary target in the area. Needless to say, the mood in the group instantly lifted. Persistence often pays off, but you never know how or when it will.
