Jake Blount, A.M.! After a couple tiring, mind-expanding years, I got my Master’s in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from
@brownu last weekend. This is the first of three degrees I’ll get at Brown; since I was accepted to the Open Graduate Education Program earlier this semester, I’ll get a second A.M. in Anthropology while I work toward my music Ph.D. I owe a great debt of thanks to the folks pictured here, and many others (especially
@molliefarr21 ,
@bassic_nelson ,
@bespoke_meatsuit , and
@gus_tritsch for their patience with my constant state of overwhelm). Thank you for helping me rise to this challenge!
My A.M. paper, “In the Breath of the Dead: Remixing Black Uchronia in Spirituals, Work Songs, and Avant-Garde Metal,” explores Black speculative frameworks encompassing and exceeding Afrofuturism, grounded in the work of avant-garde metal band
@zealandardor . I had the great fortune to complete the project under the guidance of Dr. Genevieve Allotey-Pappoe (slide two). It’ll find its way out into the world eventually, I hope!
I’m now heading into my qualifying exams, which means some quieter months while I work my way through about 400 books and articles in my areas of interest, and write roughly 80 pages—on top of coursework and TAing! I still have some really exciting gigs this summer and stretching into the fall, and hope to see some of you on these comparatively rare emergences into the real world.
