Christmas came early for the Blanco household. Welcome Autumn , a 2 yr old Bassett/dachshund mix. She is the absolute sweetest and has made herself at home now . Adopted from the great @huckleberryhounddogrescue , which is the same rescue where we got Ollie .If you have space in your heart and your home this season, please remember there are so many dogs and cats waiting to be loved. They are not “just shelter pets.” They are family waiting to happen.
Yesterday we celebrated your last gotcha day and today we said our final goodbye . Seven years ago he climbed into my car like he already knew I was his. I got him right after losing Rex, and I have always believed Rex had a hand in sending him to me. My heart was hurting, and Cooper became my comfort. My soft place. My little shadow.
He loved to lean on your chest . Always close. He barked at every dog on the TV no matter how many times we tried to convince him otherwise. He proudly chewed the ears off stuffed animals. He was stubborn and silly and never met a stranger.
He was part of our family. Maple, Angus, and Ollie will feel this shift. Even though he was the older one, he was still a presence. A steady little heartbeat in our home. They loved him in their own ways. They will miss him too.
Today we held him.
We told him he was safe.
We told him he was loved.
We thanked him for every year he spent with us.
And when he left us, I like to imagine he did not go alone.
I hope our moms were waiting for him.
They both knew him. They both loved him.
I hope they scooped him up and said, we will take it from here.
