It feels strange to celebrate anything in this world right now. However, I’m a Black woman turning 32 years old & our ancestors fought for us to smile. So celebrate, I will! And then it’s back to business. This one is called: “Take this picture while I’m not sucking my stomach in right quick- I’m thirty two. I want to remember my real body.”
So let’s talk about Smoke & Stack.
In my last analysis, I hinted at there being a sort of trinity between the three main characters of the film- Sammie, Smoke & Stack. I say that to say that the film utilizes each of its characters to represent vastly different approaches to navigating the predatory entertainment industry (and the world at large).
Smoke representing the morally & physically superior, “you can’t & won’t f*ck with me” of it all (that often doesn’t go very far); Stack representing the “do as they do, become what they are” of it all (that can last forever, but costs you your soul); and Sammie representing the duality of these options, the importance of knowing the light & the darkness, and the ownership required when you choose to use your gift. Sammie’s father, Jedidiah, a pastor representing the ruler of the day who wants your soul. The vampire Remmick, representing the ruler of the night, who wants your soul, too.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t take some time to speak on @michaelbjordan ’s character work in this film. It’s some of the best I’ve personally seen in a very long time. His thoughtfulness about the differences in how the twins might move through a room, how they articulate themselves differently, the expressions that he chose versus the line being said, all masterfully executed. If we cared about the Oscars over here, I’d say GIVE THAT MAN ONE OF EM!

I find myself disagreeing with my own takes as quickly as I deliver them to you all, because truly, there are no right answers. There are limitless ways this film can be interpreted and that’s my favorite thing about a great movie. 🍿
