I’m left with a gaping hole in my heart after my beloved Grandpa Martin’s passing. Despite him being 92, I could have never prepared myself for this moment. The vibrant healthy man I visited in November starkly contrasted the one whose hand I held at his hospital bedside last week. Although inevitable, I feel indescribable pain, but I tell myself it hurts so much because of how much we all loved each other, and for that I consider myself lucky. How privileged I am to have 30 years of beautiful memories— but the finality of these fun and love filled times with him leave me longing for one more hug. He was a highly intelligent man whose accomplishments included being a veteran and an engineer, but he was most proud to be a husband, a father, and a grandfather. We promise to take care of our grandma, whose undeniable strength during this time has us in awe. We will get through this as a family, just like we have done for every other obstacle we have faced.
