Friends, at the start of the new year my family and I had to lay my grandmother, Linda, to rest.
For those of you who don't know, she was in the late stages of Alzheimers.
I loved her.
And she loved me. I know this because those were her last words to me. When I finally got to see her for the holidays she was already in hospice care and had become mostly unresponsive. But when she saw me she got that big smile on her face like she always did and became very active in those moments, like she had been waiting on me. Before I left I kissed her on the forehead and said to her
"I love you."
And though she was shaking and struggling to move she still managed to say
"I love you too."
She didn't speak anymore after that. A few days later she stopped being able to take liquids, and then she passed shortly afterwards.
I am lucky; very few people get the chance to have those kind of last moments with those they care about.
Friends, never take those you care about for granted. Never take for granted the time you get to spend with them. And most of all never underestimate the power a gesture of love can mean for someone else, no matter how small.
We often think of life as an endless well, but when you really think on it, it's such a finite thing. How many more times will you get to see your grandparents before they pass? How many more times will you tell the people you care about that you love them before you never get the chance again?
Think on that number...and increase it over and over again.
Don't leave it to chance. Tell them you love them. Tell them you care. Show them they matter.
You have no idea much they might need to hear it.
I love you Nay Nay. I always will.

This past Sunday I got to take part in the 14th Annual World Aids Day Fashion Show STRUT.
A portion of the proceeds from from STRUT is always donated to HIV/AIDS Service organizations who usually provide FREE services to those living with HIV/AIDS. STRUT is also used as a platform for information sharing and outreach.
It has been a while since I did a runway show, but I am so proud to be a part of a show that supports such a good cause. It was a great night surrounded by good people.
