Up at Scone Palace this week checking in on the ‘After the Fire’ show garden.
Amazing to see it shift into late summer; soft pinks from the heathers and campions still showing, fresh foxgloves rising tall over the charred fire stump, rowan berries on display, blackberries ripening, and the mosses standing out as one of the clearest reminders of resilience and renewal after destruction.
The People’s Choice Award is still open. Thank you to everyone who’s voted so far. You can cast your vote here:

Gardens are about how they look and feel, but also how they work.
Designers find solutions. Beneath the beauty are resolved elements: levels, drainage, structure, planting and materials, and an understanding of how everything fits together from design through to build.
For this garden in Roslin, Midlothian, what started as a simple sloped lawn needed to become a series of usable spaces that could be built properly, manage water, and sit comfortably within its surroundings.
That thinking happens long before ground is broken. What feels seamless on site has already had its dress rehearsal in design and planning.

Grew up watching Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, so I’ve always had a soft spot for tree ferns.
They capture that sense of a more primal, rainforest-like landscape.
In this project, they’re set within corten steel planters to introduce a softer, more natural quality that contrasts with the surrounding contemporary architecture.

This new-build plot in Edinburgh transforms a standard sloped garden into a two-level family space, centred around a pergola-covered social area, with a pebble water feature and a lavender-lined barefoot walkway creating moments to pause and slow down.
These features are balanced by generous open areas and a restrained planting palette, providing year-round structure and seasonal interest while remaining simple to manage.

Loved working on this garden. Loose and seemingly random, yet unified through colour.

Every day really is a school day with planting!
A big thank you to @spaceshaper and to @marissagardendesign and @blackwood_gardens for organising. An inspiring and thought-provoking day in Glasgow @SGLD event on Planting into Recycled Substrates, expanding quite a bit on my previous grasp of 'right plant, right place'!
From beneficial cyanobacteria and soil microbes, and their relationships with seemingly dead building material, to pH impacts, substrate properties and testing, the potential for recycled concrete to reabsorb CO₂, and plant eco-ranges, phenotypes and adaptation.
A good reminder to observe what plants actually need in their natural habitats, compared with the resource-intensive installation and management we often provide for them in designed landscapes.
Great insights and much to explore. Looking forward to my copy of Gardening in a Changing World: Plants, People and the Climate Crisis arriving. Absolutely worth a read if anything like the talk!

Life can be busy, too many tasks, things to tidy up and get finished, but gardening doesn’t have to be another job to tick off, maintain or take too seriously.
As the saying goes, gardening is just adults going outside to play.
Even just clearing a bit of ground to throw a few seeds down, while leaving other spaces to grow, self-seed and be spontaneous. Have fun, try things out and enjoy the results. 🌱

Getting close to dahlia planting time (at least indoors anyway!).
I can’t think of many plants that bring quite as much saturated colour to a garden as dahlias. Any favourites to look out for this year?

Conservation and listed building planning always adds a different layer of design challenge.
We were appointed to revisit a previously unsuccessful application, with a clear brief: resurvey, rethink and resubmit a scheme considered overdesigned and overly reliant on hard landscaping.
Five access points — front road, front door, back garden, outbuilding and bin store — had to be resolved without excessive hard landscaping and while avoiding the mature sycamore’s Root Protection Area. All new construction is therefore set on existing hardstanding. A low grey planted paddlestone gabion wall sits on a shallow, free-draining sub-base at existing levels, avoiding the need for deep foundations.
The garden is realigned with the surrounding linear landscape, returning more of the site to pollinator-rich planting. Hard surfacing is limited to what is functionally necessary, with muted clay pavers defining paths, and clipped yew replacing a previously proposed fence to create softer, living boundaries that improve biodiversity and water infiltration.
A practical solution shaped by context and constraint, whilst allowing the garden to breathe again.
