Tune in tonight to Jazz Incognito on 89.3 WXYC from 5-7pm. We'll be talking about and playing a few tunes off of the new Unsustainables album! Some bits and bobs about the album, the band, and my writing style: - I'll preface by saying I really don't have much in the way of theory chops, I've just been playing in all sorts of bands for about 25 years (concert band, orchestra, jazz band, punk, reggae, etc etc). - A lot of ska focuses on uniform horn lines. I take a lot of inspiration from The Georgetown Orbits - who I grew up listening to in Seattle - and write many of my horn lines as close-harmony homorhythms. Think of like a choir singing in harmony. It makes for a mellow, polished sound, evocative of the "uptown ska" of Byron Lee and The Dragonaires. I think this is probably appropriate for our group, as most of us are white collar scientists and engineers. - We have a few sonic signatures. Horns are definitely at the forefront of the band, which our friends and fans seem to really enjoy. - Nuno employs some really fascinating sonic textures on guitar. I think he's got a flanger or phaser on his board he uses on some of the more fanciful tunes like Honeydripper. This results in a psychedelic texture that works really well with our late-60s/early-70s sounds. - Not a lot of ska bands have congas. Kris's congas push us sonically towards more Latin influences and makes for a very lush texture. We're really humbled by the kind feedback we've gotten on the album, and it encourages us to keep creating. I think we have a rising tide for ska music in the Triangle, and it's only going to get better from here.
