The Sagrada FamĂlia in Barcelona, one of the most extraordinary architectural works in the world â and still under construction more than 140 years after it began in 1882.
đď¸ Overall Structural Design
đ Latin Cross Floor Plan
The basilica is built on a Latin cross layout typical of many large churches.
It has five naves (longitudinal aisles), with a central nave rising above the others.
The transept (cross-arm) intersects the nave and creates the cruciform shape.
Behind the transept is the apse with an ambulatory and seven polygonal chapels.
đ˛ Organic and Natural Columns
Inside, GaudĂ designed the support system to evoke a forest:
Columns rise like tree trunks branching out to carry the roof and vaults.
These arenât straight Gothic columns but are shaped using GaudĂâs innovative geometric forms.
This helps distribute loads naturally and creates a sense of lightness and verticality
đĄ Skylights and Light-filled Space
To lighten the roofâs weight and bring in sunlight, GaudĂ used skylights and hyperboloid window shapes.
Stained glass creates ever-changing color casts inside as the sun moves
đź Towers and Vertical Structure
đ Eighteen Symbolic Towers
GaudĂ planned 18 towers, each with symbolic meaning, and they give the basilica its unique skyline
