Sun overdoor carving installed in Longniddry, a little riff on the wonderful little carving on 'John Knox's house' in nearby Edinburgh. Nice to see pieces like this and the scroll scattered through the site as the development starts to come together #sculpture #stonecarving

'Key' Overdoor Sculpture for apartment complex in Longniddry The black and white colour scheme somewhat fancifully made me think of Florence, with its colour scheme of pietra serena and stucco, tondos, and della robbia ribbons Really it was an excuse to learn to work with ribbons in some nice howley park 🎀 #stonecarving #newclassicalarchitecture #longniddry #Sculpture

Capital for 1 Palmeston Place, Edinburgh, now The Palmeston restaurant. Interesting Edwardian design of a square column with inverted volutes, one of the original pair was wrecked in a car crash in 2023 (13) Worked faster than I would have liked over 8 days straight #stonecarving #architecturalrestoration #stonemasonry #stonework

Bust of Sam, Lasa Marble, 2021-23 The finished thing and some pictures I dug up of the process. Prompted by an unused except from the @_art_scot_ article with @douglas.erskine "I contrived Marble carving school in Italy as the antithesis to Edinburgh College of Art, where my intention was to soley study the techniques and forms of sculpture unburdened by the conceptual rigour of contemporary practice. My work has always concerned things out of time, and in a way this period expanded the scope of that project to my whole self. I’d moved to an old house in a beautiful and remote Alpine village of Laas and spent the school days rigorously copying antique plaster casts into marble quarried from the mountains above. This bubble in time and space, bounded by the mountains and isolated by lockdowns, created a totalising experience that was in some way the conceptual grounding (or lack of) that allowed me to model and carve a purely classical bust. The bust of Sam rekindled my love and understanding of sculpture as an art, but equally it was also a statement of ability and intent. With @douglas.erskine dive into my work and the ideas behind it on @_art_scot_ I thought it would be an oppourtunity to share some of the pieces I spoke about from my degree show at Edinburgh College of Art back in 2018. the 'shellmet' panel beaten and cast aluminium visor on a motorcycle helmet the 'Gothic Sandcastles', the poetics of time, world building, and the beauty of architectural redundancy. Made out of foundry sand with he great help of @powderhall_bronze who generously indulged my ideas of turning the casting process on its head. I didnt speak about these two but they were there too 'After Paolozzi after Blakes Newton', a meditation technology, geometry, and geology through a fella playing minecraft with house plants on his back 'Telfer Barrier' a 1:1 replica of the then recently installed 'anti-terror barriers' - that almost seem to trace the historic city walls - although this one was made out of soil pipe.

Door Surround for an apartment block. The block is a large harled building which suggested to me the hybrid of vernacular and baroque sometimes found in Scottish Edwardian architecture of the early 20thc, which I so admire. The surrround consists of a typical scottish pattern architrave moulding rusticated through alternating courses of blocking. capped with an oversized keystone breaking through the inflexed pediment. The chunky keystones and rustication makes for a punchy design but an Economical one, too, as these pieces require little to no masonry work. The surround is designed to be easily intergrated into modern block construction with the pieces corresponding to brick and block courses and widths. It also beautifully fitted all on two pallets ! The doorway naturally has an important relationship between inside and out. Giving a bit of attention on this area can really create the character of a building, turning it from an opening to an welcoming portal, and a design such as this provides a lot of bang for your buck. All carved in Darney Sandstone from @huttonstonecoltd showing off its beautiful natural variety

Date Stone I've designed and carved for Longniddry Village at @huttonstonecoltd This stone is for an apartment building, inspired by the date stones and builders plaques found on tenements around Scotland, I love historic datestones, often contemporary ones play it safe, perhaps we arent so comfortablein our time, anyway, I had the oppourtunity here to do something a bit more extravagant. enjoyable work designing raised letter cyphers, would love to do more if anyone has the inclination ! Thanks @addisoncopas for the typographic advice! #stonecarving #architecturalcarving #datestone #2025 #typography #lettercutting #letteringart #lettercarving #cypher #monogram
