Now that I put it out there, all excuses are off, we had guys almost 20 years older than me, in prime shape and no excuses! What can I say, I'm addicted to the simplicity of knowing I'm going to score perfect surf...No Grom is going to paddle inside of me to challenge me for my position...And I'm only gone for a 1 1/2 days. I do miss getting on a plane and going away from weeks at a time, but life doesn't afford me that option right now. Rolling up my sleeves, working hard and enjoying life's little pleasures along the way. Humbled by the support of my wife and family, and clients that encourage these luxuries!

I’ve basically been in denial all summer that the twins promoted from 8th grade and are on their way to high school 😭 what a joy to have a front row seat to this journey!
All I wanted to do is hide under a rock for my 50th birthday, but others that care about me wouldn’t let that happen and I’m glad they didn’t. I’m an introverted extrovert, if that makes sense. I’m thankful to have amazing friends and family and I was filled with emotion for those who took time to share their time with me to celebrate. This past decade was filled with so much joy, loss, and new aches and pains. Most of all I’ve been fortunate enough to walk around with a cup of love that is constantly over flowing. So with that I’m ready to take on my 50’s with a new wisdom that I just didn’t have in my 40’s.
December 14th is a date that I can never not think about… Dad it’s been 23 years and you’ll be happy to know your sister checks in on me every year. Brian, It’s had to believe a year has already passed since you left this earth. No one prepares you for the heaviness it is to live without your family around. Some days in particular, it’s just hard for some reason and you can’t explain why, but other days are filled with joy and connection to you, appreciation for the path that you both provided, the humor, and the comfort knowing that you both live in me, my mannerisms, definitely my sick humor! There’s a comfort in knowing that I have angels looking over me and my family. Today I celebrate you with fondness. Love to you both…your brother, your son. 💕
Anxiety… that’s the feeling you get after accepting an invite to the Surf Ranch. Will I perform to my best ability or even worse, will I blow it and fall on a $400 wave? Now add the fact that you’re battling a mystery illness, possibly Parkinson’s, that came from nowhere and you have zero feeling on half of your body, your reaction time is like living in slow motion, and you have no paddling power due to the lack of range of motion, would you say yes to the invite? Our ego and pride have a way of robbing us life’s sweetness. Well, I wasn’t taking no for an answer and he knew that. Everyone knows his lethal backhand snap on display at pipe, and he’s a staple at the top of pitas… a man of very few words who would prefer to be unnoticed, almost a loner if you will. But after a few descriptive examples, everyone knows who you are talking about! Meet Carlos Anaya. I met Carlos when I was 9 or 10 years old surfing at the end of seaward beach. Him, Johnny Rodriguez, Jim and Hahn. These weren’t your typical blonde hair blue eyed surfers you see in the magazines. They were dark, rough around the edges, and raw, just like their surfing. I was like them and knew I needed to get to know these guys. As the years passed, the others stepped away from the ocean, but Carlos remained. Carlos is a couple years older than me, but man I was always competitive with him, from jockeying for position, to downgrading how hard he snapped that last lip, and of course I didn’t see that deep pit you pulled into.. as that would be admission of my insecurity of my place in the pecking order. Later in life none of that mattered. What mattered more was the history we shared. It became more about an us vs them mentality, referencing all the outsiders and kooks invading our territory. We would collaborate vs battle to dominate the days offering. And thus the brotherhood bond grew stronger. I hadn’t seen Carlos for about a year, and when I did see him I could tell something was different. The doctors don’t know what happened or why, so he is left with a mind that is committed to solving the problem, but his condition remains and continues to challenge him. Continued in the comments.
I’ve probably only ridden 10 waves in 2024 due to a bad ankle injury. Last May we were at the surf ranch and I could only ride two waves and had to give up my sessions due to the pain. My buddy @tomjina benefited and he ripped the place up. Nothing better than to share this wave with those closest to you. This time I brought another life long friend who has been suffering worse than me this year. I knew I couldn’t go left and so I brought him to pick up my slack. I’ll post another video of Carlos and his surf ranch adventure. So once again the surf ranch did not disappoint. It brings us all together with great food, great spirit, and an amazing wave. I did learn something valuable about myself on this trip though…I lack “chill”, I’m a frother, I indented only to cruise and even contemplated riding a midlength. Here’s my version of taking it easy at the surf ranch for which I’m paying for it today as I can barely walk.
