From Will Calhoun . . .
Plate tectonics, this idea that the very surface of the earth is not an unyielding solid, but a set of independent segments in a constant state of flow, was not always accepted as truth. It was only developed in 1967, but once geophysicists saw how accurately it described familiar phenomena, there was no going back.
At the exact same time, Jack DeJohnette was emerging as a new force on drums. His percussive vigor and complexity were profoundly unsettling to those who relied on the familiar swing beats of the music of previous decades. But it was a new time; there were new issues to address. There was no going back.
Had Jack DeJohnette done only that, it would have made him at least a minor legend among the cognoscenti. But the fact that he had a long, fruitful career— leading many bands, composing, collaborating, bringing younger musicians along— made him something much, much more.
Will Calhoun is one of those younger musicians. A storied drummer, as DeJohnette was, Calhoun is best known for driving the band Living Colour, but his curiosity and range of exploration know no bounds. Let’s hear about the doors and windows that DeJohnette opened for him, with freshly unearthed live recordings from the WKCR archives.
This Monday (12/22) from 6p to 9p NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD, or wkcr.org (/).
The family of Jack DeJohnette would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and appreciation that have come our way. It has been very moving.
We also want people to know that there have not been any memorials as yet for Jack, so please disregard the AI, fake postings that are made-up.
A public memorial is being planned for next year. The information will be posted here and on Jack’s website.

Thank you for your support.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jack DeJohnette. He died peacefully in Kingston Hospital, NY. He was surrounded by his wife, family, and close friends. Jack was a NEA Jazz Master. His legacy will live on.
The first time I saw and heard Sly
he blew my mind!!
The band was trying the new material
from their upcoming album, Stand.
They were not announced so they
could play and see how the audience
responded to the music.
Sly’s music was and still is very relevant to what’s happening today!!
Sly is an innovator who influenced
so many artists like
Miles, myself, Prince, Herbie Hancock..
just to name a few of the musicians
he touched so deeply.
Sly changed the sound and shape
of new music!!!

The great Roy Haynes has passed away. He had such an elegant way of making the drums speak. When I first came to NY he looked out for me, even gave me a drum set when I really needed it! I was honored to have him play drums on my first recording. He was inspiring to so many artists, I am eternally grateful for the creative gifts he gave me and many others. I feel blessed that our paths crossed during this lifetime, thank you Roy ❤️🙏🏾
