Happy Arbor Day 2026. This is an animation of the bark of 230 trees captured through my flatbed scanner.
Last November I spent around 6 hours walking up to every tree in Herbert Von King Park with my laptop and scanner to capture detailed scans of their bark. I found it fascinating how the scans came out distorted due to the depth between the round trees and flat scanner bed.
This exercise was completed initially only to be used as research towards a larger body of work I’m building around trees, but today feels appropriate to share what I gathered near the beginning of my process.
The following slides feature inkjet prints of some of my favorite scans that I took.
More trees soon
