Jack Warne’s father was a painter in his free time, the kind of quietly dedicated draughtsman who found in painting a way to engage with the world on his own terms. Among his subjects was the Harrier Jump Jet, an aircraft that captured the imagination of his generation like few others. The Harrier seemed to defy the laws of physics, lifting vertically off the ground with no runway required, and for someone fascinated by history, it was an irresistible subject.
Jack Warne had a fond memory of his father painting. When he returned to his father’s painting, he did so not as a copyist but as an interpreter. The resulting work blurs and mirrors the original image until the Harrier becomes something ghostly, hovering between presence and absence. Memory works this way too.
