March 7, 2026, United Indians of all Tribes commemorated the 1970 takeover of Fort Lawton. The history of Discovery Park and Seattle itself is inseparable from the bold activism of the Native community. In March 1970, the Takeover of Fort Lawton sparked a movement that changed the landscape of Seattle forever. The 56th anniversary was celebrated with a march from the bluff, the site of the second occupation, to Daybreak Star Indian Star Cultural Center to share stories, love if community and a meal.
