🌧️❄️Berlin im Winter ❄️🌧️ Full Series
I realised this work by painting hot melted wax on paper. A process where timing is tight because the heat from underneath will liquidify the wax so quickly that the image can’t be controlled, as in painting for example with oils.
The loss of control through the independence of the material, forced me to make very fast decisions and therefore work as intuitively as possible.
I realised that this process leads to a similar approach in which children realise creative work -play.
Having lived in Berlin for 16 years I often have been trying to reflect what Berliner winter, which is extended and grey, does to people’s existential feelings. The ambivalence between wanting to disconnect in the urban setting paired with the opposite longing for interaction. The cold the dark bringing in a wall of tension. Or the question whether the weather is a representation of an inner life of discomfort. And if the many complaints about the weather are actually a projected frustration about the way we live together?
I enjoyed filling the grey with warm wax and colour as a meaning of protest against the cold inside.
Stay warm
