For the past three years, I’ve been working on a book about the dismantling of the National Endowment for the Arts in the early 1990s, and how America lost much of its arts funding over a handful of (mostly queer) artists, including Andres Serrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, David Wojnarowicz, Karen Finley, Marlon Riggs and Todd Haynes. It’s a piece of history that’s become all the more timely over the last few weeks, as the Trump administration moves to reshape or gut a number of federal agencies, including the NEA. I’m so excited to announce that Indecent and Obscene: How America Lost Its Arts Funding is being published by @haymarketbooks !! I cannot imagine a better home for this book and love that I’m getting to work with @kro421 again. So many thanks to @rob.mcquilkin and the whole @mmqalit team for being the best at what they do. Round two here we go!!!

Stopped by @powellsbooks to sign some copies of my book and they had it on three (3!!!) different displays—Life Changing Lit, Art as Resistance, and then the shelf with all the other gay stuff. Extra thanks to bookseller @astxrias.bookshelf for the kind words.

California friends! Next week and the week after, I’ll be on the West Coast for some book events—two in LA and one up in San Francisco. The first event is at @despairbooks in Echo Park on May 7th. It’ll be a conversation between me and @schulmanny , whose essential book about ACT UP “Let the Record Show…” is about to be released in paperback. May 9th, I’ll be at @booksoup in West Hollywood for a conversation with my dear friend @mizpiggy111 . We will probably be cackling the whole time, and hopefully it’ll be just as fun for everyone else. May 12th, I’ll be at @fabulosa_books in the Castro, in conversation with Esther Kaplan—ACT UP member, editor, and author of “With God on Their Side,” an incredible book about the relationship between Christian Fundamentalists and the George W. Bush administration. Come to one! Or be like my dad, and come to them all!
