In the Default_0001 project — now presented as a radio series — Joe Marner researched the intersection of digital archives on YouTube, personal memory and identity, and experimental listening practices. Before platforms like TikTok and Instagram, Apple's “Upload to YouTube” feature (2009 – 2012) enabled the sharing of personal videos, often titled generically like IMG_0001.MOV and IMG_0284.mp4, etc. These videos, along with other home cameras, simply uploaded with a click of a button, act as archives of everyday life, capturing ephemeral moments through sound and imagery. By solely focusing on the auditory elements of the videos, new layers of meaning emerge. What do the background noises in these videos uploaded to YouTube many years ago tell us about the environments they were recorded in? What stories can these sounds tell when revisited and reused? How can we reinterpret sound to uncover new meanings? Drawing from sound studies theorists like R. Murray Schaefer, Michael Bull, Pauline Oliveros, and more, this research puts YouTube as an evolving sonic archive, where private moments become collective memories. Through experimental listening techniques, this study seeks to transform forgotten sounds on YouTube, henceforth known as the YouTube Graveyard, into living soundscapes, demonstrating that even the most ordinary recordings hold the potential to tell profound stories about modern life and memory.

I am very excited to share the link to my portfolio website, where you can have a look at my recent design and sound work. After 3 months of hard work, gathering images, retaking images, testing and coding different design layouts; I am very proud to say it is finally live! (best viewed on your laptop or pc for now!) The website highlights my work in book and layout design, typesetting, archive digging and image organising, coding and also my sound work. I am always open for collaboration, freelance projects, design jobs, internships, or even just a friendly chat!

default_0001 (2025) This work is composed of screenshots from publicly available YouTube videos, all uploaded with a click of a button on old iPod touches (2009–2012), most with only a handful of views. I captured stills by randomly searching filenames like “IMG_0001” and “IMG_0238,” then paired each image with a brief description of the accompanying sound, quote or action. These stills, gathered from hundreds of anonymous sources, are rearranged as poetic fragments: traces of digital intimacy, ambient storytelling, and ephemeral moments. By removing the images from their original context and pairing them with captions and quiet reflections, the work explores how subtle gestures and anonymous visuals carry memory, mood, and meaning.
