the black velvet corset is embroidered in the traditional style of el Istmo de Tehuantepec, my mamá’s native Oaxacan town. frida khalo rocked a lot of this textile too, which lent it a sense of queerness or activation outside of its context.
an isthmus is narrow land between two seas, the corset on Daniel is an image between cultures… a bridge between and towards, a struggle, and a momento of the line a lot of us walk in between/on top of intersecting identities
