This is the second presentation in ARCH's library showcasing materials that support and inform artistic practice—such as artist books, drawings, printed matter, ephemera, and archival documentation. These presentations offer insight into the broader context and development of an artist’s work.
Nikolas Simantirakis’s involvement with graffiti has shaped the way he perceives form, line, and the meaning of a signature. The letters—especially those that compose his artistic name—serve as the starting point for each of his paintings. The ephemeral, unstable, and transient nature of graffiti is one of his central influences. This impermanence has led him to a process of continuous transformation and adaptation: he adds and removes elements, allowing the letters to evolve and shift into something familiar. He draws and paints his signature repeatedly, until it begins to resemble something—perhaps the most honest answer to the question, “What is it?”
