I wanted to share some of the scenes of a recent project I shot for the @nytimes with journalist @jeremyraff As someone who was born in Mexico, and came here as a child, I find it difficult to understand how people could think that there is no more room for people in this country, and no more room for immigration. From what I see, and saw, immigrants, of all countries and kinds, are the backbone of America. When you try and take that away, the foundation of this whole place, starts disassembling. There is no question, to me, that this country chooses to Capitalize heavily on the “American dream” but decides to only provide it when convenient, or if you look a certain way. This story is an example of; when he said mass deportation, did you think he didn’t mean you?

I wanted to share a set of images and video I shot for a recent project with the @nytimes These images are part of a short doc we produced. The task was to spend a week down in the most southern part of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, and tell a story on how the construction industry has been heavily impacted by ICE raids and mass deportation. Thank you @jeremyraff for bringing me on and trusting me to collaborate with you on this. Shot on a Leica EV1 and 50mm Noctilux.

Words by Daniel Aderaw Yeshiwas, Ethiopian American entrepreneur and general manager of @cafecolucci and part of @brundospices and one of our featured teams at #bbqwithoutborders2025 This is the story behind the spice — and a celebration, an offering — for all of us in the Bay Area holding our breath in uncertain times. As we wait, we remind ourselves: stay informed. Choose power over panic. Remember the people who make this place beautiful. People like Fetlework Tefferi — who journeyed from Addis Ababa to Oakland, opened a nightclub that became a home for East Africans, and built the foundation for what is now Café Colucci. Now led by her nephew Daniel, who brings us flavor, love, and possibility — exactly what we need right now. 🎥 by @thirdandgilman @ivannarez #NoImmigrantsNoSpice #CafeColucci #BrundoSpiceCompany #EastBayLove

I love the shooting modern digital footage and how to best manipulate it to feel film like and organic, but ain’t nothing like some classic Tri-X. Scenes from El Paso shot on contax T3 while working on a project with a really special set of individuals. Processed and Scanned at home, always. Thank you @jefemercado for bringing me on to DP this.

A love letter to El Salvador, told through the hands and heart of Chef Anthony Salguero and his incredible restaurant, @popoca.oakland . 🌋🍽️ As Popoca approaches its two-year anniversary in town, we’re honored to celebrate this milestone and the stories behind it. This Sunday, we raise a glass to culture, community, and craft. Huge thanks to @ivannarez and the team at @thirdandgilman for capturing the soul of this journey so beautifully. And deepest gratitude to Chef Anthony for being a true supporter and contributor to Barbecue Without Borders and our resultant resilient fund, which will open on September 3 for distribution! #PopocaOakland #BarbecueWithoutBorders #ElSalvadorEnOakland #ChefAnthonySalguero #ThirdAndGilman #FoodWithStory #CulturaYComida
