In Café de la Rue komen Oud en Nieuw-Molenbeek samen. Marie-Noëlle Doutreluingue vertelt met militant enthousiasme haar verhaal, van het café en de wijk terwijl de facade van het beschermde café wordt gestut door steunbalken.
What a pleasure and a privilege to have Julian Barnes in our midst. He was guest of honour on his self-proclaimed ‘Farewell tour’ yesterday in Ghent. In a conversation ranging from deep feeling over sharp analysis to peals of laughter we discussed his writing, art, life, love and death. Alexander De Vriendt and Jean (no hyphen!) Paul Van Bendegem shared their admiration and love for his work in a moving tribute. The Bataillie brothers, Frans Grapperhaus and Emma Posman treated Barnes to wonderful renditions of music by Berlioz, Strauss and Shostakovich. But most touching of all was the warmth, respect and attention of the readers for the writer, and vice versa.

Voor wie er gisterenavond niet bij kon zijn in de Bijloke in Gent: vanavond zendt @radio1.vrt de hoogtepunten uit van het gesprek dat ik gisteren had met auteur Julian Barnes over zijn werk, schrijven, het leven, de liefde en de dood. Hij las voor uit zijn, naar eigen zeggen, laatste roman ‘Vertrekpunt(en)’. Het was een wondermooie avond en een eerbetoon van zijn lezers aan de schrijver, en omgekeerd.

Barbara Prada @pradaisbarbara is a Belgian-Peruvian artist with a topping of Spanish and Japanese heritage.
“My practice sits between gastro-anthropology, history, and micro-narratives of migration. It often begins with the everyday: a kitchen, a conversation, a shared meal. I am interested in how recipes and rhythms travel beyond the bodies that carry them: how potatoes or yuca cross the ocean from Latin America and transform into fries, tapioca, or cassava; the rhythmic echoes between cumbia and became a principal tiber in their gastronomy and culture, here in Belgium and in Africa.
I consider art, gastronomy, and music to be living archives that everyone can understand and have pleasure with it, for me it is a wonderful and powerful critical & political tool I love to use in my practice. In a context where racism and xenophobia continue to shape our realities today more than ever, returning to our shared roots and making them visible again becomes a natural act of resistance for me. Remembering that what unites us is deeper than what seeks to divide us.
There is also a deeply personal dimension to this process. In each place I try to reconstruct my identity, as if it were a constantly evolving recipe, adding a new ingredient to my soup. In this journey, I recognize that the connections between Asia, Africa, and Latin America are not coincidences, but traces of a shared history in continuous reinterpretation...an ongoing search that is part of who I am. They are present in my body, in my rhythm, in the way I perceive and create.”
