Growing up with a father who was both a photographer and a videographer, I watched him capture countless moments. My dad loved taking pictures and shooting videos so much that he started a company around it. Over time, he documented so much, family pictures, friends’ events, and his travels. He also loved traveling and was passionate about photography.
Recently, a few days after he returned from Cameroon, he pulled out all these albums, and I started going through them. Even when I visit home in Cameroon, I go through the albums we have there. One thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve never been able to find any baby pictures of me. There are no baby pictures, even from my early years. While I do have some pictures with my siblings, there are only a few where you can find me. I assume it’s because I was often ill, and maybe no one wanted to document that part of my life. Perhaps it wasn’t seen as the best moment to photograph me.
Now that I’ve turned 35, I’ve realized how important it is to document my life. Whether it’s meaningful conversations with my friend Jeremiah, moments from icôneBrunch, my personal life, art, the foundation, or just everyday experiences, I want to create lasting records. Life is fleeting, and as we grow older, we move closer to the inevitable. What we leave behind, the memories, the lessons, and the light we share matters.
I say all this to remind myself and others to treasure the present. The present is truly a gift, and while we often chase the future, it’s the moments we savor now that hold the most meaning. I hope to document these moments not just for myself but for the people who will see them in the future, my children and beyond. There is so much within us to discover, and we must take the time to explore it and leave something meaningful for others as time passes.
