The number of crimes involving e-bikes has risen ten times in the last five years across the North East and North Yorkshire. Electric motorbikes that are designed to be ridden off-road are legal to buy. They can only be used on private land and become illegal when used anywhere else, such as on public roads, cycle paths or footpaths. As police continue to tackle the problem, there are calls to ban them all together.

A family say they are 'disappointed' by the prison sentence handed to a teenager who knocked down and killed their 86-year-old mother while riding an illegal e-bike. Billy Stokoe, 19, was over the cannabis limit when he hit Gloria Stephenson. The teenager was jailed for six years and nine months after he admitted causing death by dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for more than eight years.

A man who spent years pretending to be severely disabled to avoid justice after being charged with 15 child sex offences against three boys, has been jailed for 15 years. John Siddell, 41, was accused of sexual assaults against the boys aged between four and 14. He pretended to be non-verbal, incapacitated and needing a wheelchair, while his brother James Siddell lied to police about the severity of John’s health conditions. Siddell, 41, formerly from Hinckley, was convicted of perverting the course of justice alongside his brother 44-year-old James Siddell, at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday 12 May.
