岡山は山奥の菅生のおばあちゃんの家に泊まった夜のこと
九月の お彼岸のころだった
夜中 枕のまわりを ぎしっ ぎしっ と誰かが歩く音で目が覚めた
確かに人の足音だったと思う
夢現のようでもあったが 確かに聞こえてた
しばらくして 音が止み 静けさが戻った
そっと目を開けると 誰もいない
翌朝 おばあちゃんに 夜中 部屋に入ったかと聞くと
起きてなんかいないよ と言う
あれはいったい なんだったのだろう
I stayed at my grandmother’s house in Sugo, deep in the mountains of Okayama,
around the time of the September equinox.
In the middle of the night,
I woke to the sound of footsteps around my pillow,
slow, creaking, human.
It felt like a dream,
but the sound was real.
After a while, it stopped.
I opened my eyes. No one was there.
In the morning, I asked my grandmother
if she had come into my room.
She said she was asleep the whole night.
I still wonder
what it was.
