It took me a few days to process both the fact that Record Plant will be closing, and the gravity of the inspiration and creativity I got to experience every session I went to at Record Plant. I will forever feel blessed for having been invited into their doors, and am so lucky to be able to call the studio one of my many homes away from home a few years back. The lessons I learned in sessions there will be invaluable to me for the rest of my life. 💕 Cheers to all the music, memories and friendships made there.. and I really hope someone buys it and really takes care of it.. that building is a huge part of music history. It breaks my heart that this chapter is coming to an end; but I’m hopeful and excited for new beginnings. More sad than hopeful rn tho. But we’ll be okay.

The cheat sheet at the end is my favorite basic method to apply when I’m thinking of conveying a concept through the lyrics I’m writing 💎
A lot of my experience comes from my own artistry and ghostwriting for countless artists! Helping them tell their story in a creative way has only made me better at articulating my own emotions; when you get practice doing that in a detached setting, it gets easier to say what you mean. Don’t be afraid to get more songwriting practice by working with others and seeing what works together. I know sometimes it feels like we should write as much as we can on our own before showing anyone, but it’s great to have someone to bounce melodies and ideas off of. Plus- It’s way less embarrassing to have a co-writer tell you a line is lame than letting it get all the way to streaming platforms with weak lyrics. Keep the concept and relatability in mind and you’ll be surprised what you can come up with.

Having worn both hats now (artist+engineer) these are just a few things that have made such a big difference for me and WILL make such a big difference for the recording engineer in the room and take little to no effort on your part!
1. The amount of time it will take a good recording engineer to nudge a vocal that was recorded without a click track into pocket varies but it’s all time saved when you give them/us the best raw takes to work with. Nobody’s perfect and we don’t expect perfection! Everybody just wants the vocal sound great and on time 💕
3. Most engineers won’t take responsibility for your studio sessions, and most studios will delete your music off the computer as soon as you leave! Bringing your own hard drive is the best (and sometimes only) way to save your sessions, back them up later, and bring them to any other studio or engineer in the future. Not to mention it’s a lot faster than uploading all of the files to a cloud service like Google Drive, Dropbox, or WeTransfer, so you’ll be able to spend more of your session time making music and less time of transferring it!
3. If you’re an engineer, you know what I’m talking about with this one 🤣 The amount of times I’ve had to spend hours trying to cut out the sound of a heavy chain (or 5) is too many to count 🤦🏻♀️ Do your engineer a favor next time your record and take your chains off before you get in the booth!

I’ll be sharing music industry secrets, tips and tricks to surviving and thriving in the Los Angeles music scene.
I’ve been out here since 2018 (working in music since 2013), learning new skills all the time while working out of both legendary studios with major artists, and some of the smallest studios you could imagine with some incredibly talented indie artists. Some of those skills have become imperative to my career out here, and have kept a roof over my head in this crazy economy.
