@10corsocomo presents The New American West: Photography in Conversation – an exhibition examining how the idea of the American West has been constructed, mythologised, and continually reimagined through photography over nearly a century.
The exhibition is co-curated by
@alessiodenavasques @howardgreenberggallery , and
@carriescottcurates . Photography is positioned here as both document and projection. Contemporary works by
@maryameisler and Alexei Riboud
@akriboud enter into dialogue with images by Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Diane Arbus, Esther Bubley, Mary Ellen Mark, Robert Adams, Joel Meyerowitz, Lee Friedlander, Wright Morris, Minor White, Allen Ginsberg, Wim Wenders and others.
Together, their work traces the West from the early twentieth century to today – revealing not a single story, but a layered and evolving idea shaped by ambition, displacement, beauty and contradiction.
At the heart of the project is the 2024 journey undertaken by Eisler and Riboud. a shared journey experienced independently. The two photographed the same territories without sharing images, producing radically different visual responses.
Without overt political declaration, The New American West reflects on the enduring promise once attached to the frontier – freedom, opportunity and reinvention – while acknowledging the exclusions and hardships embedded within those ideals. Through photography, these tensions remain visible, open to reflection and re-seeing.
