Congratulations to TheJournal.ie and The Noteworthy, winners of the Mary Raftery Prize for social affairs journalism for their TOUGH START series which investigated obstacles for Traveller children in Ireland in health, education, accommodation and justice. Receiving their award at St Patrick's Campus DCU last night journalists Maria Delaney, Michelle Hennessy and Cormac Fitzgerald said : 'At its core, was the Traveller community who were involved in every step of the investigative process. From the very start, when we were exploring what issues we should focus on, to trusting us to report on their experiences. We know that journalism in Ireland hasn't always got things right in this regard, so we really appreciate the time and trust given to our team by every Traveller who took part. A special thanks to the children who spoke to us, their comments were some of the most powerful in the series and this is their story. Our team especially thank Pavee Point, the Irish Traveller Movement and the Traveller Visibility Group in Cork - who were all key in helping us bring this series together.
