Over a hundred people took to the streets Friday evening as part of a rally for International Workers Day. May 1 has traditionally been recognized as an international day of action in commemoration of the fight for the eight hour work day. In addition to signs in support of local union efforts, some demonstrators also waved signs for a number of other causes, including condemnations of the Trump administration, the "Epstein Class" and the wars in Iran and Gaza. The Ithaca Voice’s weekly podcast, Backstory, returns next Tuesday for its second season. We considered the podcast an experiment when we began making it. One of the main questions we wanted to answer was how will our readership respond? The answer was resoundingly positive. The number of times we’ve been asked when the podcast will return has been heartening. We’ve also been able to connect with new audiences and people we weren’t reaching before. From now on we’ll be giving our audience stories they not only read, but listen to. How’s that sound, folks?

Cornellians for Israel, an influential student group, kept tabs on left-wing protestors, a campus rabbi, and Jewish professors. That’s according to hundreds of leaked text messages obtained by The Ithaca Voice. At the same time, Cornell University increased campus surveillance as administrators faced accusations from the Trump administration that it let antisemitism and anti-Israel bias go unchecked. Flock Safety's license plate reader cameras capture images of all passing vehicles and an AI-based software extracts data like license plate numbers, a car’s color, model and other identifying features like bumper stickers. Law enforcement officers can search for a particular vehicle and see when it travels through an area covered by cameras. Police departments can also elect to allow other law enforcement agencies to access their data. Ithaca Police Department says it only allows other law enforcement agencies in New York State to search its data. The extent of the data collected and concerns over its its potential misuse have prompted criticism of the technology from activists both in Ithaca and nationwide.

This week on the podcast, the battle has already begun as nurses at Cayuga Medical Center launch their union drive. It's been a decade since nurses last tried to form a union. Is the second time the charm? Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or your favorite indie podcast apps. Note: There's some big changes coming up for The Ithaca Voice and we want to make sure that transition goes smoothly. So we're going to be taking a break from our regular weekly release schedule in the coming weeks. But keep your ears up, we're hoping to release a few special episodes over the holidays.
