Walter Byongsok Chon, Associate Professor of Dramaturgy in the Theatre Studies Department, publishes volume of Korean plays in English translation.
Methuen Drama, Bloomsbury Publishing has published Sound of the Moon and Other Plays by Myung-Wha Kim, translated and edited by Walter Byongsok Chon, in collaboration with English language translation consultant Anne M. Hamilton, (E-book: April 30. Hard copy: May 28).
Myung-Wha Kim is one of the most respected active Korean playwrights (also a director, critic, and artistic director). This volume is the first translated play collection of a female Korean playwright by a translator working from Korean to English.
The volume contains Birds Don’t Use a Crosswalk, Oedipus: The Fate of the Story, Sound of the Moon, and The Wind’s Desire. While these plays reflect specific Korean sentiments and sensibilities, these stories have international appeal. The questions they pose about art, love, family, politics, and society transcend cultural and national boundaries.
It is an excellent resource for everyone interested in contemporary Korean plays.

Thank you to the Daesan Foundation for the 2022 Grant for the Translation of Korean Literary Works (Co-awardees, Chon and Hamilton).
This volume was created with the support of two Bogliasco Foundation Fellowships (Chon, Hamilton, 2024).

IC’s new Pep Band launches this fall! 🎺🏈
Students from across Ithaca College will have the opportunity to bring the energy to home football games and Cortaca at Yankee Stadium.
It’s a chance for students to learn a new style of performance, for music education majors to gain hands-on experience before leading ensembles of their own, and for student musicians from across campus—not only the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance—to shape the gameday atmosphere and be part of a new tradition.
Students are invited to express interest and learn more in the IC News story. Link in bio.
Happy Faculty Friday!
MTD proudly highlights the recent sabbatical activities of Professor Jorge Grossmann, whose work continues to bridge contemporary composition and intercultural research.
During his sabbatical, Prof. Grossmann advanced his ongoing research on pre-Columbian instruments, deepening his exploration of their acoustical properties, tuning systems, and cultural contexts—an area that has significantly informed his distinctive compositional voice. His current collaboration with French multi-instrumentalist Pierre Hamon will result in a new work, Spirals of Wind, for antaras (ancient ceramic South American sound artifacts) and string quartet. Prof. Grossmann is also composing a series of studies for Bitklavier (a keyboard tuned to the temperament of the ancient antaras) which show his in-depth research on the sound world and, in particular, the tuning systems of the Nasca civilization of ancient Peru.
This spring, he was invited as a guest presenter at several leading European institutions. At the Paris Conservatoire, Prof. Grossmann delivered a lecture and met with students to discuss his recent orchestral and chamber works. He also engaged with faculty and students at the Kunst Universität Graz and the MDW – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, in workshops hosted by their Composition and Ethnomusicology programs.
Prof. Grossmann extends his sincere gratitude to Prof. Clemens Gadenstätter (KUG), Prof. Stefano Gervasoni (Paris Conservatoire), and Prof. Johannes Krez (MDW) for their generous invitations and stimulating exchanges.
We are proud to see Ithaca College faculty contributing to international artistic dialogue at the highest level.
