How do you turn old fishing nets into a chair? Meet the Kelp Chair, designed by ITG Studio, or Interesting Times Gang, a Swedish design studio. These chairs are manufactured from recycled plastic that comes from fishing nets.
The studio actually sees this as an âinterstitial designâ on the way to creating a chair manufactured from kelp, a macro algae. They developed a prototype of the kelp version last year.
The current version is manufactured using additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing. Layer by layer, the recycled fishing net plastic is built up to create the chair. While early printers used basic plastics, todayâs advanced additive manufacturing technologies can create quite durable and robust products.
The ambition to work toward a biomaterial is commendable. While many additive manufacturing projects stay in the lab, the Kelp Chair is a commercial product. Itâs fully recycled and available for under $800.

The concept created for @fotografiska.stockholm features custom âMahaloâ tables and a bar counter from recycled fishing nets sourced from Swedenâs West Coast đžđȘ, all set against the backdrop overlooking the Stockholm archipelago đ.
