AI futures are being written now. Who gets to shape them? The FemFirst Research Observatory is calling on women and nonbinary-identifying researchers across South and Southeast Asia to develop research that builds new knowledge pathways for feminist AI. In a landscape dominated by extractive AI economies and Global North-centric frameworks, the Observatory seeks to nurture research that is grounded in lived realities, regional solidarities, and methodological plurality. From policy, technical choices and political economy to labor, care, and resistance, we’re looking for work that challenges dominant AI paradigms and reimagines what equitable AI futures can look like. Selected researchers will develop two original research papers and contribute to a growing interdisciplinary ecosystem advancing feminist AI in the region. If your work asks timely questions about AI, power, inequality, and justice — this call is for you. Everyone talks about AI replacing coders, analysts, and white-collar workers. But the conversation becomes very different when we talk about AI replacing artists. What happens when poetry, music, storytelling, and artistic labor are treated as disposable “luxuries” instead of essential ways societies make meaning? Sadhana Sanjay, @itforchange , suggests that the crisis isn’t just about automation; it is about recognizing what kinds of human work we decide matter. Read the full article via link in bio!
