🌍 89% of citizens worldwide demand stronger government action on climate change.
But any change - including ambitious climate policy - can only succeed if it’s rooted in public legitimacy and collective ownership. Citizens must have a seat at the table and be co-creators of global solutions.
As the Climate COP opened on Monday in Belém, we and our partners call for a permanent Citizens’ Track that puts people at the heart of global governance. Democracy International is proud to be a member of the coalition for Global Citizens' Assemblies, making the just transition and citizens' active role a reality.

At the UN Summit of the Future we also heard from Dr. Tollulah Oni, Clinical Professor of Global Public Health &Sustainable Urban Development @cambridgeuniversity
🎙️ *"We need local expression of the global—local needs driving global action, and localizing global commitments. The Assembly's power is in its network of community assemblies."*
The GCA isn't just about climate—it's about **wellbeing**. *"We now know that when we act on climate, we act on health."*
There’s a real chance for the Assembly to challenge and correct the power imbalances embedded in our systems.

At the UN Summit of the Future we heard from Rich Wilson, ISWE's CEO, on the power of self-determination and the Global Citizens' Assembly (GCA):
🎙️ *"Self-determination is an ancient idea found in all cultures, but now, with modern technology, it's more possible than ever."*
This isn’t just about putting pressure on governments. It’s about creating a platform for collective action and negotiating our future together.
In the last five years, over 200 climate assemblies have emerged globally. The GCA aims to connect these efforts into a lasting, coherent movement that goes beyond COP30.
*"Imagine live data showing what citizens truly think about climate negotiations in real time. It could transform the way we approach global challenges."*
By 2030, we hope to see 10 million people involved, creating a new model of global governance.

On the 23rd of September at the UN Summit of the Future, we heard from @anaatoni , Brazil's National Secretary for Climate Change
"We have a lot of expectations for COP30, but we need to hear from people on what they want - what is our common goal?" “Thinking about preparing for COP30, the first and perhaps most important thing to do is mobilising locally... “We need to listen to the people on what they want from COP30.”

Valeria Colunga, Executive Strategy Officer at Southern Voice, spoke at our Global Citizens’ Assembly launch event at the New York Summit of the Future:
"As geopolitical tensions have worsened, the voice of citizens has been squeezed out, making it harder for governments to hold firm on climate agreements." 🌱
"People power isn't a substitute for intergovernmental processes, but it enriches the way we do business, equipping the international system to tackle today’s complex challenges." 🙌
That’s why advocates like Valeria are excited by Brazil’s commitment to make the Assembly part of COP30 in 2025. 🇧🇷
"The Summit of the Future provides a shaky foundation, but the GCA can begin a new chapter—one that puts citizens at the heart of governance." 🗣️
This is a chance to listen to the voices bearing the greatest risks in global crises. 💬
