Announcing our next Circular Design Project: TOWARDS A TIMBER BANK FOR LAUNCESTON
Waste-focused designer and maker Isaac Williams in partnership with Launceston arborists, Arbscape have been awarded an NRM Northern Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Grant, facilitated through Design Tasmania.
A single felled oak tree ā approximately 8ā10 cubic metres of Oak ā is the starting point for something with far greater reach.
Over the next 12 months, Isaac will investigate what happens when urban trees are treated as a design resource rather than a disposal problem. The project maps existing arboricultural waste flows, examining where timber currently gets chipped, burned or landfilled, and builds a practical case for capturing and redirecting it. The immediate outcome will be objects made directly from the recovered oak, to be presented at the completion of the project at Design Tasmania.
The longer-term ambition that will be researched is the potential for a community-accessible infrastructure that keeps urban timber in the local design economy where it belongs.

Part of āSoftening Squaresā
āBeginning as an architectural exploration in embracing natureās forms, Softening Squares navigates the balance and intersection of the seemingly paradoxical but ultimately linked relationship between the natural and the human made. An early established visual language/framework underpins these explorations. Circle = Natural Interconnected Systems. Square = Modern Isolated Systems. Form, geometry, symbol and waste material as artefact, are used to offer a snapshot of current nature/human disharmony, as well as presenting conceptual examples aspiring for a harmonious synthesis.ā
āRebirthed Cork Dine (Chair)ā 1 of the 2 two designs included in the @ngvmelbourne Rigg Design Prize 2025. āRebirthed Cork Dine (Chair)ā 2025.
Found Steel Frame, Found Plywood (St pats lockers), Cork, Stainless Steel Hardware, Powder Coat, Hard Wax Oil. Show runs until the 1st of February 2026.
Rebirthedā is a collection of functional objects created from discarded objects/materials. Items are collected and stored until their representation pathway reveals itself.
āRebirthed Cork Dine (Chair)ā continues a redesign system, developed in response to large quantities of discarded chairs with failing vinyl/leather upholstery, frames are refined and upholstery replaced with cork.
Rebirthed āWaste Bagā from 2018. Made from the failing upholstery removed and replaced by cork in the āRebirthed Cork Dineā chairs and stitched together with strips of bike tyre. There are still a few wallets from this range in available in my shop.

āConvergeā
The exploration of this form, with the intention of synthesising the forms of modern buildings, with natures forms, was the ignition point of my ongoing fascination and experimentation with the circle and square wrestle.
Iāll keep making them, as I collect appropriate found material. Hit me up if youāre interested in purchasing.

@thomasjckwood beautifully capturing some of the wonderful details that stacking these chairs revealed.

The other of the 2 designs included in the @ngvmelbourne Rigg Design Prize 2025. āRebirthed Pallet Dine (Table)ā Found Pine (From Packing Pallets), Pva, Stainless Steel Hardware, Hard Wax Oil.
āRebirthed Pallet Dine (Table)ā is constructed entirely from single-use pallets, the design emerged from witnessing the abundant quantities being discarded. During development, a broadly applicable timber rebirthing process was established. The organic/minimal form echoes the treeās essence while balancing the visual busyness of the laminations, that provide required strength.

Huge thanks to @thomasjckwood for the photography and @designtasmania for lending the space to shoot in.

Stoked to finally be able to share visuals of the @ngvmelbourne Rigg Design Prize 2025.
This is the kind of show Iād be frothing to be able to experience, so to have my āRebirthed Pallet Dine Tableā and āRebirthed Cork Dine Chairā showcased alongside side such incredible designer talent is hard to fathom but hugely inspiring.
Very thankful for the support of the NGV team throughout the process (specifically @simoneleamon and @sarinam ), @designtasmania (the table was finalised through their āTasmania Makesā program) special mention to @boyde_of_paradise and of course my fam @ashashash.wilson and Ru Boy because without their support and sacrifice I wouldnāt be able to do any of this.
The show is now open and runs until February 1st. Level 3 of the Ian Potter Centre.
