“As much as the nurses tried to speak about recovery after my brain injury, it felt life-defining. The road ahead didn’t seem so simple until we contacted Irwin Mitchell.” Our client, Billy was about to start his penultimate year at university when a car pulled out of a junction and knocked him off his bike, changing his life forever. Our legal experts secured interim payments quickly, which secured a short- and long-term plan for Billy’s rehabilitation and enabled him to return to university and finish his degree. With Billy’s entire career, and most of his life ahead of him, compensation, rehabilitation, and support from his family have helped him to get his life back on track. One week on from our National Amputation Conference, we’ve been reflecting on the conversations and insights shared throughout the day. Our keynote speaker, @richard_whitehead_mbe , talked about the wider impact of representation and visibility, reminding us that the power of paralympic sport is to, "help people with disabilities understand what is actually possible. It also educates the wider community to know that disability doesn't stop you from achieving anything in life." Richard’s message captured a theme that ran throughout the conference - that progress in amputee rehabilitation is about more than innovation alone. It’s about understanding lived experience, challenging perceptions, and ensuring people are supported to move forward with confidence and independence. From developments in AI and bionics to the importance of personalised, collaborative rehabilitation, our speakers and guests shared their thoughts on what meaningful progress looks like, now and in the future.

Together, with @baby_lifeline , we’re recognising and showcasing maternity and neonatal care at the UK MUM Awards, shining a light on what works well, so that best practice can be shared and learned from across services. Irwin Mitchell actively campaigns to improve maternity care by promoting learning, safety and continuous improvement. Our report highlights that 1 in 5 parents aren’t confident in their care, so awards like this are more important than ever in our campaign.

Two years after losing her leg in a car accident, Olivia struggled with negative feelings towards her prosthetic leg. Around that time, interim payments in her legal claim gave Olivia access to a wide choice of mechanically advanced prosthetics, which were more aesthetic. Her claim also allowed her to work with physiotherapists on building strength to make them easier to wear. Colour matched to her other leg; Olivia’s cosmetic leg allows her to wear shorts and dresses with confidence. As a teenager getting ready for prom, it was a detail that made her night so much better. Through our legal work, we see first-hand the devastating impact meningitis can have when symptoms aren’t recognised quickly enough. We’re partnering with @meningitis_now for their 40th anniversary photography exhibition, as we’ll tell 40 stories of hope. Join us on the tour as we look ahead to a better future, where everyone affected by meningitis gets the support they need to rebuild their lives. The exhibition starts in Stroud, with us then hosting the exhibition in our London office on 26 May, and Manchester office on 9 June, followed by Cardiff, 29 July, and Edinburgh, 6 October.

Olivia was 10 years old when a car crash changed her life in an instant. Her mum, Lisa, worried about how the family would cope when she came home from hospital. “We felt very vulnerable as parents, but we had to park our emotions. It was a challenge, but because of the trauma you’ve been through you accept it and go through the motions.” With empathy, our legal expert, Hilary Wetherell, showed the family how and why things could be better. The claim gave them access to a comprehensive rehabilitation package, specialist prosthetics and compensation. Now Olivia’s parents have the peace of mind that comes with knowing their daughter’s future is secure. Watch Olivia’s story on our website.
